Every game strives to retain some form of replay value, and there's no better way to ensure players come flocking back to experience an RPG playthrough than by offering different classes. Diablo 4's five have more than sufficed, giving players unique experiences with distinct builds and loadouts. Since its launch in June last year, Diablo 4's most popular classes have fluctuated, with the recently released end-of-year statistics from Blizzard revealing the Sorcerer and Necromancer are its two most used playstyles. They seem to possess an edge over other classes, although this status may change with upcoming Seasons.
There's always a discussion about the best class and builds for online multiplayer RPGs like Diablo 4, and although every player favors one over the others for personal reasons, some fit perfectly for a large portion of the fan base. At launch, the Sorcerer attained the title of the best class in Diablo 4, before quickly falling off to obscurity in about two weeks due to its perceived difficulty beating Nightmare Dungeons above Tier 70 and a disappointing Paragon Board. The class rebounded in Season 2, and there's an underlying reason for this.

The Sorcerer's Resurgence Has Been Remarkable
It's important to note that Diablo 4's most popular class doesn't necessarily translate to the most powerful. However, the Sorcerer has become a solid choice once again, displaying top-tier crowd-control mechanics with a range of chaotic elemental powers that few other classes can manage. Coupled with their revamped loot potential and good armor visuals, it's no surprise the character genre took the top spot in Diablo 4's 2023 statistics. In the current Season of Blood meta, the Sorcerer has some of the most powerful builds, and this contributed to its rise after a fall-off in Season 1.
Chain Lightning, Arc Lash Ball Lightning, and Ice Shards are regarded as the best builds currently available in the Sorcerer class, with the first two boasting incredible stats on offense and defense simultaneously. However, Ice Shards might be the best for Diablo 4's endgame, equipped with enhanced AoE damage and nimble movement capabilities. The build's Mana regeneration contributes immensely to its status, giving players an advantage in PvP and against world bosses with its ability to hard-cast Ice Shards for a long time.
The Necromancer is Solid, Despite a Few Issues
The Necromancer, on the other hand, has had a consistent reputation for being one of Diablo 4's best classes right from the onset. Their popularity is closely related to that of the Sorcerer, as their flexibility in range makes them stand out from the crowd. Whether in close quarters or from afar, a Necromancer is deadly in combat. This advantage, combined with their darker-themed Sorcerer-esque magic, is one of the reasons why the class is so widely used in Diablo 4. The Sever and Bone Spear Necromancer builds are considered the best for this character category.
The Sever build is famed for its leveling versatility, as the combination of the Sever skill and the constant AoE damage of Corpse Explosion clears dungeons at speed. The Bone Necromancer is no slouch either and can be applied in dungeon, boss, or PvE fights, sacrificing minions and causing massive levels of havoc with its Skeleton, Golem, and Bone Spear skills. However, fans of the class have had a problem with Diablo 4's endgame, as the most competitive build isn't minion-based. The best Necromancer straying away from the core idea of its class is ironic and perhaps is one of the reasons the Sorcerer has the edge for the time being.
