In 2010, Vudu was sold to Walmart. In 2020, Fandango Media acquired Vudu for an undisclosed amount. While initially maintaining the Vudu name due to brand recognition, Fandango Media nevertheless rebranded the service under the Fandango brand in 2024.

Vudu doesn't charge a subscription fee, so there is no free trial available with a Vudu account. Instead, the account is always free. But there are perks for signing up.

Vudu only allows users to rent and purchase titles a la carte or watch its free content with ads. By contrast, Amazon offers several different ways to access its video content.

Freevee is Amazon's free video streaming service. Even though it doesn't cost anything to use, it provides an impressive value for a free service. Through Freevee, Amazon strives to deliver the quality of content you would expect to see on a paid service.

Fandango has decided to completely rebrand Vudu, a streaming video service that's been around for over a decade, to Fandango at Home. “We will still have the same great films, shows, deals, and bundles, plus your library will stay right where it's always been,” the company said in a post on X (via 9to5Google).

According to Cameron Douglas, Fandango's senior VP of OTT and streaming, the goal for the name change is to “better align our products under one brand, reinforcing Fandango as the destination for premium entertainment at home and at the theater.”

Vudu, the digital video service that was owned by Walmart before Fandango bought it last year, is finally making its way to the Amazon Fire TV platform. The app is a big source of high-quality, 4K HDR movie rentals.

(Comcast, the parent company to Peaco*ck, also owns Fandango and Vudu.) The promotion is only available to eligible Peaco*ck members that receive the invitation email, we understand. It will be interesting to see if the added benefits will incentivize streaming subscriptions, as Peaco*ck likely hopes.
