Starfield: How to Save (2024)

Starfield is a huge game, and players will easily sink dozens of hours into it. In Starfield, just like with any other game, it's important to save from time to time. An unexpected crash might happen, the power might go out, or gamers might even have chosen the wrong option and made a decision that they regret. An additional save file is a great backup plan.

This guide will show Starfield players all the saving options that they can change in order to meet their preferences, how to create a save file, and how they can manually save the game whenever they'd like.

Save Options

Starfield: How to Save (1)

In Starfield, there are several saving options that players can customize in Starfield so that the game is more in line with their preferred experience. To change saving options, gamers must open the Main Menu or the Pause Menu, select Settings, and then Gameplay. Here are all the options that can be modified in the game's settings:

Save Option

How it works

Save on Rest

Activating this option enables autosave when the player goes to sleep.

Save on Wait

Activating this option enables autosave when the player is waiting to skip time.

Save on Travel

Activating this option enables autosave when the player decides to fast travel.

Save on Pause

Activating this option enables the game to save once the player pauses it after a preferred amount of time. Here are the options available:

  • 5 minutes
  • 10 minutes
  • 15 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 45 minutes
  • 60 minutes

Players can keep pressing the right arrow until they've reached "disable" to disable the Save on Pause option.

How to Manually Save

Starfield: How to Save (2)

Players can save their game by opening the Data Menu and then pressing System. Here they can either quicksave or save the game.

When gamers quicksave the game, they'll overwrite the previous quicksave. It'll still create a new save point, but they will lose access to the one they had before. Players can use this option if they aren't planning on returning to their previous save point and don't mind losing it.

If the player feels like they might want to return to a certain point in their space adventure, they might want to create a separate save file for it, which is why there are two save options - they work slightly differently. It's also good to create a new save file every now and then in case there's an unexpected crash or an error that prevents the player from continuing their game.

Starfield is available now for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
