Memorial Day ceremonies, parades to be held throughout Mid-Hudson Valley (2024)

Memorial Day, a national holiday that pays tribute to the nation’s war dead, is Monday, May 27. Here’s a rundown of announced parades and other observances in the area:

City of Kingston

The city of Kingston announced Saturday, May 25, that the Memorial Day Parade scheduled for Monday, May 27, was canceled due to the chance of thunderstorms in the forecast. The Memorial Day ceremony scheduled in Veterans Park in front of City Hall, 420 Broadway, will take place inside City Hall on May 27 at 1 p.m.

Esopus

The American Legion Post No. 1298 parade will step off, weather permitting, at 10 a.m. Monday, May 29, at the Dollar General store on U.S. Route 9W and proceed south to Riverview Cemetery. A ceremony will take place at the cemetery before the parade proceeds past a stand at the Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union on U.S. Route 9W. The parade will end at the Port Ewen Firehouse on U.S. Route 9W.

Hurley

A parade will step off at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27, from the THikit print shop at 185 Zandhoek Road (formerly St. John’s Mission), proceed north on Zandhoek Road, turn right at the end of the Hurley Cemetery property, cross Hurley Avenue, travel the length of Main Street, cross Wynkoop Road, turn left on Wamsley Place and end in front of the Town Hall, where there will be a ceremony, food and beverages. The parade route is about 1.5 miles. The route map can be viewed at tinyurl.com/hurley-parade. The staging area at the THikit print shop will open at 9 a.m. Participants should arrive no later than 9:15 a.m., entering from Zandhoek Road and parking in the grassy area on the right.

Hyde Park

The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic site and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum will host a series of free Memorial Day weekend events from Saturday, May 25, through Monday, May 27. A World War II encampment and military displays will be set up on Saturday and Sunday. A flag display including hundreds of American flags will be flown all three days. It is sponsored by the Hyde Park Education Foundation. A ceremony and parade will be held at noon on Monday, May 27, at Hyde Park Town Hall and Hyde Park War Memorial hosted by American Legion, Post 1303.

Marbletown

A parade will step off at 10 a.m. Monday, May 27 at the Stone Ridge Centre Plaza and end at the SUNY Ulster campus, followed by a memorial service and refreshments. It is sponsored by the Marbletown Veterans Committee, the town of Marbletown, and the Stone Ridge Fire Co

Milan

A parade will step off Sunday, May 26, from the Milan Town Hall, 20 Wilcox at noon. It is housed by the Town of Milan Veterans’ Committee.

Olive

A parade will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the West Shokan Post Office on state Route 28A. The parade will proceed to the Town Hall on Watson Hollow Road and the pavilion at Davis Park. The events are sponsored by American Legion Post No. 1627.

Pine Plains

A parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, at the Pine Plains Firehouse and will stop at the town clock memorial on South Main Street for services. The parade then will proceed to Evergreen Cemetery for an additional ceremony. The parade is sponsored by Shekomeko American Legion Post No. 426 and Pine Plains Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5519.

Poughkeepsie

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Dutchess County War Memorial on Monday, May 27, at 11 a.m. The Dutchess County War Memorial is located at John K. Rinaldi Memorial Park at the intersection of Raymond Avenue and Main Street. The remembrance will include a wreath-laying ceremony, presentation of colors by the Poughkeepsie High School JROTC and remarks from Madison Fletcher, commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars, district 2.

Rhinebeck

A parade will be held on Monday, May 27, at 10:30 a.m. starting at the Dutchess County Fairgrounds and hosted by American Legion, Post 429.

Red Hook

A parade and ceremony will take place Monday, May 27, beginning at 10 a.m. at Red Hook High School and proceeding left to Market Street to the center traffic light, turning left at the light onto Broadway heading north to Memorial Square Park for the ceremony. It is hosted by Red Hook Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7765.

Saugerties

The American Legion Post No. 72 on John St. in Saugerties will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 6 p.m. on Thursday May 30. Master of Ceremonies will be James George, a Korean War veteran. The school scholarship award will be presented. Refreshments will be available following the ceremony and the Veterans History Museum will be open for visitors.

Shandaken

A parade honoring the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces will start at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, on Main Street in Phoenicia. A ceremony will follow at the Shandaken Eagle on state Route 28. There will be hamburgers and hot dogs at the American Legion Post No. 950, 1045 Veterans Way, Phoenicia, after the ceremony.

Staatsburg

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 8 a.m. on Monday, May 27, at Dinsmore Park on Old Post Road and hosted by community volunteers.

Tillson

The American Legion Post 1219 of Rosendale-Tillson parade will be held on Monday, May 27, with formation at the Tillson Firehouse, located on Tillson Road at 9 a.m., followed by the stepping-off at 10 a.m..

Tivoli

A Memorial Day Ceremony will be Monday, May 27, at the Red Church Cemetery, 5217 state Route 9G, at 10 a.m.

Town of Ulster

Ulster Hose Co. No. 5 will hold a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, at 5 p.m. at 830 Ulster Ave.

Woodstock

The Annual Woodstock Memorial Day Parade takes place Monday, May 27. Participants will assemble at the Woodstock Playhouse parking grounds. Units participating in the
parade should begin arriving at 11 a.m. The parade will kick off at noon and proceed up Mill Hill Road to Rock City Road, and stop shortly at the Woodstock Cemetery. After a brief ceremony, the parade will reform down Rock City Road to Tinker Street, continuing through the village to its Neher Street end. Anyone interested in participating in the parade must first be cleared by the parade coordinator. The parade coordinator will arrange the lineup and line march.
