LegacyDNA FAQs (2024)

Will website access to my Y-DNA and mtDNA results be extended?

Yes, due to recent site issues, we will be extending the retirement period for all customers until September 30, 2014.

When will Ancestry.com stop selling Y-DNA and mtDNA tests?

Effective immediately, Ancestry.com will no longer offer the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests for sale.

Why are the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests being discontinued?

Over the years we have built up a variety of products that enable our users to discover, preserve and share their family history. We recognize that there are a lot of ways that we, as a company, can make family history easier, more accessible and more fun for people all over the world.

In order to do this, we need to focus on our core offerings to ensure we're delivering the best service and best product experience to our customers. To that end, we feel our greatest strength in the DNA testing space is in the newest DNA test, AncestryDNA, an autosomal DNA test that has the power to trace any one of your ancestral lines. It's not limited to just the paternal or maternal line.

What if I recently mailed in my sample to be processed?

At this time, we are no longer accepting for processing any Y-DNA or mtDNA tests sent to our lab. We apologize for any inconvenience this will cause and request that you contact us at 800-828-2362.

Is Y-DNA and mtDNA still valuable?

Yes, we understand the value you can gain from Y-DNA and mtDNA test results, however we've decided to retire these tests in order to invest more aggressively in our core Ancestry.com business, such as AncestryDNA -- the autosomal DNA test which surveys a person's genome at over 700,000 locations.

Will I be able to download my raw DNA data?

Yes, if your test has been processed, you will be able to download your raw DNA data by visiting www.DNA.ancestry.com and logging in to begin the download process.

What can I do with my raw DNA data once it has been downloaded?

Your raw DNA data will be exported into a .csv file format, and can be uploaded to other Y-chromosome and mtDNA testing services.

Will I be able to access my Y-DNA and mtDNA results after the service has retired?

After September 30, 2014, you will no longer be able to view your Y-DNA and mtDNA results on the website, but you can download your raw DNA data prior to that time by visiting www.DNA.ancestry.com and logging in to begin the download process.

Who can I speak with if I have questions in the future about your Y-chromosome and mtDNA tests?

For further questions, please contact us at 800-828-2362 or [emailprotected].

Do you also have plans to retire your entire DNA test offerings?

This change does NOT affect our AncestryDNA service, which focuses on “autosomal” DNA testing. We encourage you to check out AncestryDNA as a way for you to try another DNA experience that has many benefits.
