Noticed some of the incoming freshmen on the team’s Instagram site. We’re talking Charly Bruder, Hope Haynes, Caroline Golden, Ella Barbacci…you know, the usual lightweights ;)

But there was one I didn’t recognize who, come to find, is an U-23 team standout from the Netherlands playing in the HD league. Her name is Sanne Hak and she was on the gold medal team that won the 5 Nations tournament in Dublin last June. A midfielder who scored the final goal in the 4-1 victory over India. Impressive. [pretty sure Sietske Bruning was on that team - and don’t know about you, but I am a BIG fan of Bruning’s play thus far on the back line…]

Interestingly the day before, I saw Duke is bringing in their own Dutch phenom, Josephine Veen. She has played center back in the past, and looks like a strong distributor out of the back with lethal aim on penalty corners. Should be quite the rivalry shaping up this year! #GOHEELS #GOMATSON #BETTERBLUE #GDTBATH #KSS

IMO, Sietske Bruning was terrific last season — an integral component of the 2022 UNC national championship. IMO, she showed us what Yentl Leemans would have played like if she had played at Carolina as a freshman.

I went to the FH USWNT site curious to see if Matson had hung up her cleats. She is not listed on the roster.

Current UNC players Wirth, Heck & Sessa are on there.. Former UNC players Hoffman, Shoulder, & Sumfest still playing as well.

    https://www.teamusa.org/usa-field-hockey/uswnt/us-womens-national-team-roster

Pan Am games this year are late because they are in the Southern Hemisphere (Santiago Chile) October 24 - November 4

UNC’s Dixon & Thomassy are on the U-21 team. Incoming 2023 HS recruit Bruder also on the U-21 team. 2024 commits Courtwright & Weber on the U-18 team.

Any truth to the rumor that the USWNT field hockey teams are considering changing the team colors to red, white and Carolina blue?

UNC will be strong again in field hockey, but Coach Matson will have one very serious problem — she won’t have player Erin Matson on the field.

I did read somewhere (maybe an article on the US “Eagles” pro roster?) that Matson had traded in her cleats to begin focusing on the new role at Chapel Hill.

You are right about that, Airball - it’s hard to fill the shoes of an Erin Matson! Do we call that a “serious” problem though, or just a bigger than average loss to graduation? Either way, we knew even before the 2022 season began her time had come and it was going to happen.

Looks like with Heck, Sessa, Wirth, Haynes, Hak…just to name a few, we won’t be lacking firepower - it will depend on how this team gels and how team captains and coach manage the culture.

Speaking of rebuilding, don’t forget, we also lose Meredith Sholder - who hands down was the dominant midfielder in college hockey last year. I mean, wow. Words can’t describe her transformation from her first year to her last. She is emerging as a star on this current US Team. Then we weren’t sure, but ended up losing Associate Head Coach Grant Fulton, who has been instrumental to the team’s success for many years, yet no doubt had been pondering his career trajectory knowing Shelton would eventually be retiring. Apart from coaching at UNC, he’s built a strong background developing youth players over the past several years, making him a great fit for the new junior development role with USA FH.

Used to be coaches talked about one-and-done as a problem, but I am curious to hear peoples’ thoughts on the transfer portal as another layer that coaches must contend with in terms of recruitment and building team chemistry. Now, athletes can decide at any time to leave and play for another school. Motivations for transfers might include finding more playing time, chance to play a different field position, or a chance at a fresh start and different chemistry. Hubert Davis has called it a serious problem, and one can see why. No chance to redeem coaching missteps that a coach would normally have the ability to tweak, for their part of the equation. And a greater amount of time that has to be devoted to monitoring players entering the portal and recruiting.

Many coaches are worried about the influence of Name Image Likeness deals on team chemistry, player development, decisions to transfer to a school with more NIL opportunities, and on a school’s funding for Olympic sports like field hockey. These sports don’t generate the dollars that basketball and football do, and rely more on funding that comes to the university through outside sponsorships and alumni giving. With NIL, more of those sponsors are choosing to give those dollars directly to star athletes, when previously they directed their dollars to the school’s athletic program, or to a specific sport. A lot to chew on!!

You asked in the old thread about recruiting info.

here is the best site I have seen but far from complete.

    https://maxfieldhockey.com/collegecommitments/

the players invited to the various national teams I listed above is a good indication of who is considered elite. We have 2 in 2023 and 2 in 2024.

figuring out who is elite in the Netherlands and other foreign countries is a little more difficult.

would love to know if anyone has other resources.

I’d be glad to share what I know about incoming recruits in ‘23 and ‘24.

Sanne Hak is a speedy midfielder who is likely elite, based on reviews from the Netherlands, the way she has advanced upward in the HD, and the fact she is able to score goals on Dutch national select teams against international competition. Growing up with a stick in your hand in Holland idoesn’t mean you’ll develop into an elite player, but all Dutch elites do start out that way and the culture supports it. These are the world’s elite players. Look no further than former Tar Heel greats Impke Lempers, Britt van Beek, Eva van’t Hoog, and Yentl Leemans, who came to the U.S. and immediately stood out for their speed of play and as the most technically gifted on the field next to their American counterparts. That’s how dominant field hockey culture is over there. I have not seen her play, but I’m looking forward to seeing what she brings to this year’s squad, where as Airball reminded us, Erin will be on the sidelines working her magic, not on the field.

Hope Haynes is a Top 10 recruit on Max Field Hockey, and she has regularly played on US YNT, scheduled to play as part of the most recently named U-18 squad. You can catch her highlight reel on YouTube, and here is her club profile: http://txpridefh.com/hope-haynes.html Hope’s h.s. teammate Mia Abello is starting at UVA in the fall and is already playing way up on tne national level for her age. Hope had some very talented coaches and teammates to challenge her, by the looks of it.

Charly Bruder enrolled early and has been practicing with the women this spring. She is likely a Top 20 recruit, though I don’t have any info that verifies it. She is built like a brick hmhm and in the mix with the current US U-21 player pool with more senior Tar Heels, despite never playing her first official game in college. She is a younger teammate of Sessa’s from Episcopal and if they weren’t winning championships, they were runner up.

Ella Barbacci is Top 50 according to the MaxFH site Char was sharing, and her mom is a coach. She averaged a goal pergame in 2022-23 and and racked up 16 assists in 22 games. Careerwise scored 95 goals with 53 assists. Am not calling her elite by national team standards, but she looks to be a promising player for the tar heels. She was named a 2022-23 3rd team hs all-American.

In the 2024 class Melea Weber just completed a stint playing abroad with the U-18s as a junior in h.s. She turned heads by committing to UNC last year as one of the first in her class to make a college verbal. She is a fwd with lots of speed who scores goals on the international level.

Coco Courtwright is a junior in h.s. named to the 2nd team AA squad this past year. She has the build of a Meredith Sholder, and Coach Shelton was quoted as saying that a player of that build is a very high target player in her book. Her family has ties to UMich and it seemed that’s where she would be headed. So it was a noteworthy surprise when she committed to us instead.

My sources are the grapevine, the Max site Char shared, club teams, and USA Field Hockey, along with NEXUS pool events for junior and developmental players and those in younger youth national team pools. As people keep mentioning, there are some elite up-and-comers to watch for in the next few months at the NEXUS championships, and a few of them already have Carolina (and Coach Matson) on their mind.

For anyone interested, the Junior Pacific Pan American tournament starts today (Mon 4/10) down in Barbados, and it will be possible to purchase a single game or tournament plan for games running thru 4/18. The USA’s first match is this morning at 11am against Uruguay and there are tar heels to watch: Bruder, Dixon, Heck, and Thomassey. Former favorite Tar Heel video analyst Chris Fry will be with the team as well. Here’s the link with instructions on how to subscribe and watch: https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Field-Hockey/Features/2023/April/08/JPAC-Livestream

I will say, I enjoyed watching this match. Definitely took notice of Thomassey and Dixon for their enhanced “killer instinct” - whatever Matson has been doing with them in the off-season is producing results in speed-of-play, passing, and ball control. Thomassey in particular looked more confident which was good to see - you can tell she is putting in the work. Heck and Bruder also look solid. Was anyone else watching the video stream on Wooloo.tv?

And the USA WINS in a shootout over perennial superpower Argentina to win Gold at the Junior Pan American Championships!
Final 1-1, (4-1 shootout), Heck confidently puts away the first goal in shootout, and 3 others score. Skubisz might be the real star as GK for the US.
