Winds and Wave Vacations
by Bri Guy » Wed Oct 23, 2013 12:02 am
Hello Ya'll
I'm looking for suggestions on where to go this fall / winter that is inexpensive and has not only great wind for kiting but also has waves that can be surfed.
Does La Ventana have surfable waves? I've never been.
Camping would be fun but so would a low key cabin or maybe a rented motor home (I know, I know... I'm all glamour). I'm trying to avoid major touristy areas as well.
Thanks for your help.
Cheers.
Brian.

If you want real waves, not wind swell, you need to be on the Pacific side. To do the Pacific side you'll need to do a camp, something like
in Punta San Carlos.

Maui is an obvious choice....buddy of mine is there and I am getting sick of the daily reports of wind and waves. But major touristy and expensive.
Dominican: never been, but I believe there is surf too, not just windswell. Cuba too? Puerto Rico?
Canary Islands: fuerte ventura = strong wind. Surfed there years ago, interesting place. Crowded with europeans though.
Farther afield maybe depends on budget....and I'm just guessing at spots, don't know the wind conditions in our winter: New Zealand, Australia, Bali, south pacific islands (Cook Islands would be interesting), Chile, Peru, Brazil, South Africa....man o man, with unlimited budget and time, so many places on the list.

La Ventana is not known for waves but it is nice and it can be inexpensive.
I used to go to Cabarete in the DR but now without direct flights it isn't as attractive.
Maui is your best bet for waves within a 7 hour travel time range. The wind is quite reliable and the conditions are world class.
If you are willing to travel farther there are more places to explore.

I go to Sayulita (45 min north of puerto vallarta) most christmas holidays to surf but I have no idea about kiting. You can get "relatively" cheap direct flights.
Anyone know anything about kiting around the Puerto Vallarta area in the winter?
A guy at one of the surf shop's in Sayulita said there was a good spot where people kited just a 10 min drive from there and he would take me.... but his shop is called "Mexican Surf Mafia" and it seemed a little sketch.

The spot that's close to PV is Bucerias. Best wind is in Spring (March to June)
choppy water, lighter winds 12m but pretty consistent

I'm going to Peru at the end of November, it's not as cheap as Baja, but a lot easier to get to than Brazil or South Africa, which were the other places I thought had sufficient level of wind and waves.
Maui is of course a good option but I wanted some cultural intake on my trip.
Plus, they say if you hit Chicamas on a good day, it'll be the best wave day of your life.

Overnight from LAX to Lima, short flight to Piura, then taxi to Mancora.
Hotel in Mancora, since it is warm and there's nightlife, day trips as needed to kite the best conditions each day. It would be a long day to get to Chicamas, but there are lots of closer breaks, and the drive would be worth it.

Mancora does look fantastic. I'll be keeping that in the book.
I found this link (
http://www.vivamancora.com/english/surf.htm
) indicating that it's windy season is April to December but waves all year long.. Being that we are planning to go in December, it might be cutting it close.
Current wind indicator..
