Why is Amoeba Music called Amoeba? ›

A: We wanted to name our company "something-something" music. The word "amoeba" came up because it sounded good with "music." We just wanted it to be a psychedelic kind of name that students would relate to. As it turns out, it's a great name for who we are and what we do.

Dear Amoeba Music Community, The massive impact from the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the closure of our iconic Hollywood location at 6400 Sunset Blvd. We are now focusing on hopefully opening in the fall in our previously announced new home at 6200 Hollywood Blvd.

There will be a bathroom in the new location. It'll be locked like the old store, but just ask an employee and we'll let you use it. And finally, we will still be pet friendly!

UPDATE: MARCH 22, 2021 –More than a year after announcing final plans to move, Amoeba Music will open its doors at its new location on April 1, 2021. The new, smaller shop is housed within the El Centro development near the Fonda Theater on Hollywood Boulevard.

The name amoeba comes from a Greek word that means “change.” It is by changing its body shape that the amoeba travels. First it extends a lobelike portion called a pseudopod, meaning “false foot.” Then it slowly pours the rest of its body into the pseudopod, which enlarges and finally becomes the whole body.

Amoeba is a unicellular organism, and just like bacteria, it reproduces through binary fission. After replicating its genetic material through mitotic division, the cell divides into two equal-sized daughter cells. In this method, two similar individuals are produced from a single-parent cell.

In 1755, Rösel von Rosenhof saw and depicted an amoeboid he named "der kleine Proteus" ("the little Proteus"). Three years later, Linnaeus gave Rösel's creature the name Volvox chaos. However, because the name Volvox had already been applied to a genus of flagellate algae, he later changed it to Chaos chaos.
