STEM club will take place every Wednesday after school from 3:15-4:15pm. I (Mr Auckland) am leading it alongside Mrs Rowton from our fabulous PTFA. Mrs Rowton is a STEM ambassador and will be supporting the school with her specialist knowledge and equipment. There are a number of projects that we may be involved in. To start with we will be designing and building model cars for the F1 in schools challenge. This is an exciting initiative that involves local and national competition. Children use specialist equipment – learning about computer aided design software and how nets can be turned into 3D models. These models are then made and raced against other schools. When we entered previously, we reached the national finals so we’re excited to see how we get on this time.

At the moment there is space to join this club but we anticipate that these spaces will very quickly be filled. Come and join us and discover the power of STEM!

The children are all really excited about tomorrow’s sponsorship event. Please remember children are to come to school in their PE kit. Sponsorship forms and money should be returned to the office even if you have paid on SCOPAY. Below is a reminder of the exciting activities we have on offer!

Re: Forest School for Year 5 – Miss Leech’s Class

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Next term will see the start of Forest School sessions for your child’s class. Please take a moment to read the information below and complete the medical/allergies questionnaire attached, returning to school no later than Monday 3rd June.

Dates

Wednesdays – 5th June, 12th June, 19th June, 26th June, 3rd July

Your child will be told by their class teacher which session they are in, and all children will change into and out of their Forest School clothes at school, so please come to school in normal uniform, school shoes and coat.

They will be taking part in activities that involve team building, how to take risks safely, problem solving and communicating. Children can bring their water bottles out with them and there may be some snacks provided (please see the questionnaire attached regarding dietary requirements/allergies).

What to bring

The great British weather can be unpredictable, and, as all sessions are outside – whatever the weather – please be aware that your child’s clothing and coat is very likely to get wet, muddy and dirty – this is part of the experience for them!

Children will change into their Forest School clothing at school:

  • T-shirt(s) and jumper – lots of thinner layers are better than one thicker layer!
  • Jogging bottoms or leggings – no shorts, and jeans are not suitable as, if they become wet, your child may get very cold
  • Spare Socks – these may get wet so children need an extra pair other than their school uniform socks

Children will also need to bring the following items in a plastic bag (not in their school bag):

  • Wellies or walking boots (please provide an extra plastic bag to put dirty footwear in after their session)
  • Waterproof/warm coat
  • Waterproof trousers (optional)
  • Hat, gloves, scarf for colder-weather sessions

Please ensure all items of clothing are named.

Medical and Health information

Please could you take some time to complete this form by Monday 3rd June.

If you have any questions, please email year5@muxtonprimary.org.uk

Kind regards,

Mrs Turner and Miss Wilkinson

Forest School Team

After half term, Mrs Fowler and Mr Powis’ class will be swapping PE sessions.

This will mean the following:

Mr Powis’ class will have PE on a Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Fowler’s class will have PE on a Friday morning.

This change will happen in the first week of next half term and carry on until the end of the year.

Dear Parent/Carer,

As you are aware, in PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) we use a scheme of work called Jigsaw, which is the mindful approach to PSHE.

The Summer Term 2 Puzzle is about Changing Me. The Changing Me Puzzle includes, in every year group, 2 or 3 lessons to help children understand the changes puberty brings and how human reproduction happens. There is a very serious safeguarding aspect to this work and obviously the younger year groups are not looking at these issues directly and explicitly but rather learning correct terminology for body parts and doing the foundation work for later year groups. The Years 5 and 6 lessons look more fully at puberty and human reproduction.

We hope you will be in agreement with us that this work is vitally important for children, that it needs to be done age-appropriately and that the Jigsaw Programme gives us a secure framework in which to do this. Our policy states:

Parents have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from some or all of sex education delivered as part of statutory Relationships and Sex Education” DfE Guidance p.17

We conclude that sex education refers to Human Reproduction, and therefore inform parents of their right to request their child be withdrawn from the PSHE lessons that explicitly teach this. These lessons are below. If you wish to withdraw your child from any of the above three lessons, this must be done in writing to Mrs Pritchard, through the school office email address.

Year 4, Lesson 2 (Having a baby)

Year 5, Lesson 4 (Conception)

Year 6, Lesson 4 (Conception, birth)

We hope you, like us, will see the materials in Jigsaw as educationally sound and beneficial to our children, helping to safeguard them. If you have any queries, or wish to view any resources used, please speak to you child’s class teacher or email the appropriate year group email address.

Many thanks

Miss Leech & Mr Powis
