Sophie McKay, a rising star in the AFLW, almost didn't play football despite her famous family background. Her father, Andrew McKay, played 244 games for Carlton, and her older sister, Abbie, now captains the Blues' AFLW side. At just 10 years old, she rang the bell at Princes Park to signal the start of the very first AFLW game in 2017. However, between the ages of 15 and 17, she quit football, feeling uninspired and disconnected from the sport. It wasn't until she returned to the game that she rediscovered her passion and joy for playing. Now, at 19, she's a Rising Star contender, known for her energy and flair on the field. She's part of a new generation of talent at Carlton, along with Poppy Scholz and Lila Keck, who have revitalized the club and brought them back to the finals for the first time in three years. Despite the team's struggles in the past, including finishing 14th last season, McKay is grateful for the opportunity to play finals, especially alongside her sister Abbie, who has been playing for seven years. The competition's quality has also impressed her, as she had heard negative public opinions about its standard. However, upon joining the team, she realized it was the best standard she'd ever been a part of, and her first practice game against Richmond was a humbling experience, highlighting the strength and speed of the women's game. Despite the attention she receives, McKay embraces it, and her coach, Mathew Buck, acknowledges her talent and potential, believing she's only scratching the surface of her capabilities.
