Ontario County Civil Service Application Instructions

If the position you are applying for requires an exam, you should carefully read the announcement for the examination. The words exam and examination used in this application refer to New York State Civil Service exams.

All sections marked by a red asterisk ( * ) must be completed.

GENERAL INFORMATION TAB

Information requested in this section (Name, social security # address) is required to process your application.

LEGAL ADDRESS: Information in this section is required for all applicants. Complete the requested information regarding your legal domicile. While you may receive mail at more than one address, you can be a LEGAL RESIDENT OF ONLY ONE DOMICILE at any given lime. If your legal residency is different from your mailing address,attach a separate document noting your mailing address.

PERMANENT LEGAL RESIDENCE: In accordance with Section 23-4 (a) of the Civil Service Law, preference in appointment may be given to residents in the jurisdiction where the vacancy exists. When preference in certification is given, an eligible must have been a resident of such municipality for at least one month prior to the date of certification and must be a resident of such municipality at the time of certification and appointment. It is the candidate’s responsibility to notify Ontario County Human Resources if their legal residence changes.

CHANGES TO CANDIDATE CONTACT INFORMATION: It is your responsibility to notify our office of any changes to your name, email address, USPS mailing address, phone number and legal residency. The Address Change Form is available from our website at: https://ontariocountyny.gov/94/Human-Resources. Complete and return the form to our office. Upon receipt of a properly completed form, our office will update your candidate information in our system.

EMPLOYMENT PREFERENCES: Check all that apply.

TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS: Accommodations in testing will be provided for individuals with disabilities. Persons who are requesting testing accommodations must make a request in writing clearly stating the type of accommodation requested and the reason for the request.

RELIGIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS: Most written tests are held on Saturdays. If you cannot take the test on the announced test date due to a conflict with a religious observance or practice, check the 'Testing Accommodations' box. We will make arrangements for you to take the test on a different date (usually the following business day).

ALTERNATE TEST DATE: The full Alternate Test Date Policy is available at: https://ontariocountyny.gov/94/Human-Resources.

In conformance with Section 85-a of the Civil Service Law, children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty shall be entitled to receive an additional ten points in a competitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent has served. If you are qualified to participate in this examination and are a child of a firefighter or police officer killed in the line of duty in this municipality, please inform this office of this matter when you submit your application for examination. A candidate claiming such credit has a minimum of two months from the application deadline to provide the necessary documentation to verify additional credit eligibility. However, no credit may be added after the eligible list has been established.

COMPLETE ALL QUESTIONS: Each “Yes” response requires that you provide additional details in the box provided. Provide specific details regarding the offense, nature of charges, dates, name of employer, etc.

VETERANS CREDITS: Honorably discharged veterans of war periods may apply for additional points to be added to their final passing score on civil service examinations. The Application for Veterans Credits, the Authorization for Disability Record, and additional information regarding the requirements are available on our website at: https://ontariocountyny.gov/94/Human-Resources. Follow the instructions on all forms carefully. In order to receive veterans credits, the completed forms must be received by this office before the eligible list, from this examination, is established.

Please read the exam announcement for the educational requirements, if specialized coursework or specific number of credit hours is required, attach a copy of your transcript. Follow all instructions on the screen. It is your responsibility to provide all pertinent educational information requested. Omissions or vagueness will not be interpreted in your favor.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY TAB

EXPERIENCE: Do not use a resume as a substitute for completing the application.

  • Begin with your most recent employment.
  • Omissions or vagueness will not be interpreted in your favor.
  • You are responsible for an accurate and clear description of your experience.
  • Include all employment or military service that shows you meet the minimum qualifications for the position and/or examination.
  • Describe the nature of work performed by you and include the estimated percentage of time spent on each type of activity.
  • If you supervised others, state how many people and the nature of such supervision.
  • Part-time experience will be prorated unless otherwise stated on the announcement.
  • Verified and documented volunteer experience will only be credited when specifically stated as part of the minimum qualifications.
  • You may attach a resume as additional information.

The position you are applying for may require specific information, such as: training certificates, professional licenses, transcripts, etc. These items may be attached to your application here. You may also attach additional information you feel is beneficial towards meeting the qualifications.

FILING FEES: Refer to the examination announcement regarding the application processing fees. Do not send cash, check or money order.

The required NON-REFUNDABLE application and administrative fees must be submitted at time of application. If your application is disapproved or you are approved and do not appear for the examination, you forfeit the fees as no refunds will be made.

In accordance with Civil Service Law, Section 50.5(b), an exception to the fee requirements will be made only for persons who are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household or who are receiving public assistance. To determine if you qualify for a WAIVER of the fee, check the appropriate fee waiver box for additional information and provide the required information and/or documentation.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

EMERGENCY CANCELLATION OF EXAMS WILL BE ANNOUNCED ON: Ontario County Human Resources Webpage at

and NOTICE will be emailed to all approved Applicants no later than 7:30 AM the day of the scheduled exam.

CROSSFILER: If you have applied to take a written test for other local jurisdictions (county, town, city) scheduled on the same test date as this written test, you must notify each of the local jurisdictions no later than two weeks before the test date of the test site at which you wish to take your examination, so arrangements can be made for you to take all exams at one test site. You must provide a list of all exam titles, numbers and locations for which you have applied. The Cross-filing form is available at: https://ontariocountyny.gov/94/Human-Resources. All examinations for positions in State government will be held at a State examination center.
