Abstract:

Abstract Optimization of host performance may be achieved through programming of the rumen microbiome. Thus, understanding maternal influences on the development of the calf rumen microbiome is critical. We hypothesized that the cow maternal rumen microbiome would influence colonization of the calf rumen microbiome. Our objective was to relate the microbiome of the cow rumen fluid prior to parturition (RFC) and at weaning (RFCw) to the calf’s meconium microbiome (M) and calf rumen fluid microbiome at birth (RFd1), d 2 (RFd2), d 28 (RFd28), and weaning (RFNw). Multiparous Angus crossbred cows (n = 10) from the University of Wyoming beef herd were used. Rumen fluid was collected from the cows prior to parturition and at weaning. Immediately following parturition, meconium and rumen fluid were collected from the calf. Rumen fluid was collected again at d 2, 28, and at weaning. Microbial DNA was isolated and 16S rRNA sequencing was completed on the Illumina MiSeq. Sequence data were analyzed with QIIME2 to determine both alpha and beta diversity by sample type and day. Alpha diversity metrics reported similarities in the early gut microbiome (M, RFd1, and RFD2; q ≥ 0.12) and between the cow and calf at weaning (q ≥ 0.06). Microbial composition as determined by beta diversity differed in the early rumen microbiome (RFd1, RFd2, and RFd28; q ≤ 0.04). There were similarities in composition between M, RFCw, and RFd1 (q ≥ 0.09). These data can be used to develop hypotheses for the pathway of colonization in the early gut and can provide insight into management practices affecting the microbiome, improving host performance.

Abstract:

Abstract One of the masterpieces of the medieval Qurʾān commentary tradition is al-Basīṭ by the Nishapuri philologist and Qurʾān scholar, Abū l-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad al-Wāḥidī (d. 468/1076). It was the first Qurʾān commentary to start quoting Sībawayhi (d. ca. 180/796) extensively; it was also the first to position al-Zajjāj (d. 311/923) as a central authority in Qurʾān exegesis (tafsīr), a process already started by al-Wāḥidī’s teacher al-Thaʿlabī (d. 427/1035). Al-Basīṭ is a massive Qurʾān commentary, by any standard. The critical Imām University Edition of 2009 spans twenty-five volumes. It is rather unfortunate that this edition has left the task of studying the manuscript transmission of the work out of the picture. As a result, there is a lacuna in the edition covering verses Q 4:41-53, a substantial portion. In this article, an overview of the transmission history of the work is presented, followed by a critical edition of the missing part.

Abstract:

Abstract Context.—Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a potentially fatal and frequent complication of deep venous thrombosis, and the most reliable techniques for the diagnosis of PE are not universally available and have other limitations. Objective.—To determine the efficacy of 4 different fibrinolysis system parameters, namely, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), tissue plasminogen activator inhibitor type 1 (PAI-1), plasmin-antiplasmin complexes (PAP), and D-dimer, in the diagnosis of acute PE. Setting.—A 350-bed university hospital serving an area with 280 000 inhabitants. Patients.—Sixty-six consecutive outpatients with clinically suspected PE. The diagnosis of PE was based on ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) lung scan in combination with clinical assessment, lower limb study, and (when required) pulmonary angiography. Main Outcome Measures.—At the moment of clinical suspicion, a sample of venous blood was obtained to measure levels of tPA, PAI-1, PAP, and D-dimer using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. Results.—Twenty-seven patients (41%) were classified as PE positive (high clinical probability and V/Q lung scan [n = 12], nondiagnostic V/Q lung scan and high clinical probability [n = 1], inconclusive V/Q lung scan and positive lower limb examination for deep venous thrombosis [n = 11], and positive pulmonary angiography [n = 3]), and 39 patients (59%) were classified PE negative. The sensitivity/negative predictive value for tPA, using a cutoff of 8.5 ng/mL, and PAI-1, using a cutoff of 15 ng/mL, were 100%/100% and 100%/100%, respectively. A tPA level lower than 8.5 ng/mL occurred in 13 (19.7%; all PE negative) of 66 patients with suspected PE, and PAI-1 levels were lower than 15 ng/mL in 9 (13.6%; all PE negative) of 66 patients with suspected PE. The D-dimer, using a cutoff of 500 ng/mL, showed a sensitivity and negative predictive value of 92.6% and 87.5%, respectively. Conclusions.—Our data indicate that tPA and PAI-1 levels are potentially useful in ruling out PE, although tPA seems to be the better parameter. The sensitivity levels and negative predictive values for the rapid enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for D-dimer used in this investigation were low compared with previous studies using the same test.

This work is focused on developing all-fiber green laser in hybrid geometry, based on combination of Er:ZBLAN active fiber and silica fiber-based passive components of optical resonator and deploying Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) as highly selective mirrors for green spectral range. The scope of work covers fundamental spectroscopic characterization of Er:ZBLAN samples, determination of key spectroscopic parameters, modelling the lasing properties and lasing experiments in different pumping geometries. Abstract:

Wave energy is being increasingly regarded in many countries as a major, promising and renewable resource. This paper presents the development of slope coastal protection as a wave energy converter by capturing sea water into the reservoir through overtopping process. Physical models simulation were conducted at The Laboratory of Coastal Engineering, Hasanuddin University. A model of 30 cm x 90 cm in the 30° degree of slope made from acrylic material equipped with a reservoir at the top surface of the structures to catch seawater through run up and overtopping. Models were simulated with various wave high and periods as well as high of freeboard. The results showed that the overtopping discharge (Q) much influenced by relative freeboard height (Fb/d), wave steepness (Hi/L), reflected waves (Kr) and the number of standing waves (Nsw). The increasing Fb, the decreasing Q; the increasing wave steepness, the increasing overtopping discharge. It was found that the larger the reflection coefficient, the greater the discharge overtopping. Standing waves in front of the structure due to the superposition of the incident wave and reflection waves also contribute to enlarge the overtopping discharge.

Abstract:

Ubame oak (Quercus phillyraeoides A. Gray) is native to eastern Asia, including China, Korea, and Japan. In 2009 and 2010, a powdery mildew on Q. phillyraeoides growing in clusters and singly was observed in three locations on the campus of Chonnam National University, Gwangju, Korea. White superficial conidia of the powdery mildew fungus occurred on adaxial and abaxial surfaces. However, the white powdery growth was more abundant on the adaxial surface. Leaf symptoms commonly appeared white from May to October. Along with the typical white powdery mildew, spot and/or necrotic symptoms with irregular violet-to-wine red surfaces were also frequently observed on overwintered leaves. A voucher specimen has been deposited in EML (Environmental Microbiology Laboratory) herbarium collection, Chonnam National University (EML-QUP1). Conidia were commonly formed singly but also occurred in chains. Primary conidia were obovoid to ellipsoid, with a rounded apex and subtruncate base. Secondary conidia were generally obovoid to ellipsoid or sometimes cylindrical but dolioform when mature. The size was 30.1 to 43.2 (average 37.7) × 14.1 to 21.1 (average 18.1) μm with length/width ratio of 1.8 to 2.4 (average 2.1). Conidiophores were erect and up to 102.2 μm long. No chasmothecia were found. From extracted genomic DNA, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region inclusive of 5.8S rDNA was amplified with ITS1F (5′-CTTGGT CATTTAGAGGAAGT-3′) and LR5F (5′-GCTATCCTGAGGGAAAC-3′) primers (4). Sequence analysis by BLASTN search indicated that EML-QUP1 (GenBank Accession No. HQ328834) was closest to E. quercicola (GenBank Accession No. AB292691) with >99% identity (478 of 480), forming a monophyletic quercicola clade in the resulting phylogenetic analysis. The causal fungus was determined to be Erysiphe quercicola on the basis of morphology and sequence data analysis. Major genera including Cystotheca, Erysiphe, Microsphaera, and Phyllactinia have been reported to cause powdery mildews on Quercus plants. Until now, 22 Erysiphe species including E. abbreviata, E. alphitoides, E. calocladophora, E. gracilis, E. polygoni, and E. quercicola have been reported to cause powdery mildews on Quercus spp. (1). Of these, four Erysiphe species including E. alphitoides, E. gracilis, E. quercicola, and an unidentified Erysiphe sp. have been found on Q. phillyraeoides from Japan (1–3). E. quercicola was reported to occur on five Quercus species: Q. crispula, Q. phillyraeoides, and Q. serrata in Japan, Q. robur in Australia, and Quercus sp. in Australia, Iran, and Thailand (1). Abstract:

The interest for vegetable oils, as a source of fuels and chemicals, boosted in the last two decades amid concerns related to oil depletion. The fast pyrolysis is a process of industrial consequences. In the present study, original experimental data in fast pyrolysis are processed in order to find the parameters of ASEM- an analytical semi-empirical model developed by the Clean Combustion Technology Laboratory (CCTL), University of Florida. The parameters, constants and coefficients of the model equation (w, To, D, p and q), were calculated for each main product with satisfactory accuracy and results were compared with other authors�. The results were discussed based on similarities and differences between slow and fast pyrolysis. The conclusion was that ASEM is a valid model which can be applied with confidence in very different process conditions.

Abstract:

Introduction The D-dimer has been validated for use in the diagnosis of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The high sensitivity of the assay allows for safe exclusion of VTE in patients with low pre-test probability. Pre-test probability scores such as the Wells score for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) have been established to help guide physicians on when to order a D-dimer in patients with suspected VTE. We sought to explore the landscape of D-dimer ordering at our institution and what clinical circ*mstances trigger D-dimer ordering. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review of 237 patients in whom a D-dimer has been ordered over a 3-month period from January to March 2018 at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, Canada. Charts were reviewed for the following parameters: Specialty of ordering physician, apparent indication for ordering, patient risk factors for VTE and evidence of pre-test probability calculation. If no pre-test probability was recorded, we retrospectively calculated Wells DVT or PE scores depending on the apparent indication. We then reviewed subsequent investigations thought to be influenced by interpretation of the D-dimer. These included ventilation/perfusion scans (V/Q scan), ultrasound Doppler studies and Computerized Tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA). Results Of the 237 charts reviewed, 84.4% of D-dimers were ordered in the Emergency Department while only 14.3% were drawn on admitted patients. Sixty-nine percent of the patients were identified as having at least one risk factor for the development of VTE with prolonged hospitalization (5.5%) and personal history of VTE (4.2%) being the most common. Indication for ordering was suspected VTE in 76.3% of patients while the indications was unclear in 12.7% of patients. An initial pre-test probability score was recorded for only 3 patients. Of the D-dimers ordered, 47.7% were above the upper limit of normal (≥ 0.50 mg/L) and considered a positive test. Forty five CTPAs and 27 V/Q scans were performed with only 4 (1.69%) and 6 (2.53%) confirming the presence of pulmonary emboli, respectively. Doppler ultrasounds were performed on 18 patients (7.6%) with only one confirming a DVT. Conclusions Our data shows that the majority of physicians at our institution fail to utilize pre-test probability tools prior to ordering a D-dimer. This leads to unnecessary costs, overuse of imaging studies and results in low rates of positive scans. Abstract:

This study explores (1) students’ perception of the implementation of ‘Reciprocal Q/A Presentation’ (Reqap) as a method, which is developed on three pedagogical principles: student centered learning, English as a medium of instruction (EMI), and authentic evaluation; (2) the anxiety level the students experienced during the classes using Reqap; and (3) their expectations of Reqap method. The respondents were students of the fifth semester at the English Department of Education and Teacher Training Faculty at Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto, Indonesia. It randomly took 41 out of 102 students of the semester. This research was descriptive in nature. The data were gathered through closed and open questionnaires. The findings revealed that (1) on average students had good perception of Reqap method (4.02) and (2) the students’ anxiety was at severe level (10.93), and (3) from the open questionnaire the data shows that (a) though it caused the high level of anxiety, the use of EMI brought about awareness in the importance of vocabulary and grammar, (b) authentic evaluation helped create positive backwash on the learning, (c) Reqap made students exerted themselves more, and (d) Reqap facilitated class management. The implications of this study point to the importance of using teaching methods characterized by student centered learning, EMI, and authentic evaluation.

Abstract:

IntroductionLurasidone, an atypical antipsychotic, demonstrated efficacy and safety in adults with schizophrenia.Objective/AimsTo evaluate the efficacy and safety of lurasidone in adolescent patients with schizophrenia.MethodsAdolescents (13–17 years old) with schizophrenia were randomly assigned to six weeks of double-blind treatment with lurasidone 37 mg/day, 74 mg/day or placebo. An ANCOVA using an LOCF approach was performed to assess change from baseline on secondary study endpoints: Pediatric Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire (PQ-LES-Q) and Children's Global Assessment Scale (CGAS).ResultsPatients were randomized to lurasidone 37 mg/d (n = 108), 74 mg/day (n = 106), or placebo (n = 112). Placebo-adjusted LS mean improvement at week 6 on the PQ-LES-Q was 5.3 (P = 0.001) and 5.8 (P < 0.001) for the 37 mg/day and 74 mg/day groups, respectively; and, on the CGAS was 4.6 (P = 0.002) and 4.9 (P < 0.001) for the 37 mg/day and 74 mg/d groups, respectively. The most common adverse events occurring at ≥ 5% in either lurasidone group and at least twice the rate of placebo were: nausea, somnolence, akathisia, vomiting and sedation. Mean change in weight at week 6 for placebo, 37 mg/day, and 74 mg/day groups was 0.05 kg, 0.17 kg, and 0.49 kg, respectively. Lurasidone treated patients did not show clinically meaningful differences from placebo on laboratory measures of cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and prolactin.ConclusionsAdolescent patients with schizophrenia treated with lurasidone demonstrated significant improvement in quality of life and function. Abstract:

In this work, a compact, stable dual-wavelength Q-switched laser with a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) slurry as saturable absorber (SA) which is independent of any host polymer has been demonstrated. The MWCNTs slurry is fabricated and the peak shift is investigated using Raman spectroscopy.The passively Q-switched erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) oscillated simultaneously at 1532.32 nm and 1556.97 nm with 24.67 nm peak separation, at threshold and maximum input power of 26mW and 74mW respectively.By increasing the input pump power from 36 mW to 74 mW, the pulse train repetition rate increases from 25 kHz to 78 kHz, while the pulse width is reduced from 17.84 us to 5.24 ?s. The generated pulse produced maximum pulse energy and maximum peak power of 11.97 nJ and 2.05 mW, respectively at maximum input pump power. The recorded signal to noise ratio is about 62 dB and shows that the proposed MWCNTs slurry based SAis able to generate dual wavelength Q-switched pulse laser with high stability pulse. Ibn ?A??? All?h al-Sakandar? (d 1309) is known as the true founder of the Š?dhil? Madhhab. Little is known about his role in creating both social peace and political stability in Mamluk Egypt. Comparing him to Ibr?h?m al-Dus?q? , I will study three aspects of this role. First, I will study his introduction of a new model of the Sufi-the Faqih vis-à-vis the Sufi-the Theologian, a model that created reconciliation between the two historical enemies: the Sufis and the Jurists. Second, Ibn ?A??? All?h moved from Alexandria to Cairo to be a teacher at al-Azhar University, turning Sufism into a respected discipline, and closing the gap between urban Islam and periphery Islam. Third, he forged a political alliance with Sul??n Qal?w?n that saved the Sul??n enough popular support to create political stability after long years of political turmoil.

Abstract:

Objective During continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), the loss of complement factors via the dialysate may cause complement deficiencies. This hypothesis was tested in a group of children treated with CAPD. Design Classical (CH50) and alternative (AP50) complement activity and serum levels of factors C1 q, C3, C4, C3d, B, D, and P in CAPD patients were compared to normal controls and to children with preterminal renal failure. Setting Patients were seen in a university hospital; normal controls were seen in an outpatient clinic of a general hospital. Patients A group of 22 children on CAPD was compared to a normal control group of 44 children and to a group of 12 children with preterminal renal failure with a creatinine clearance below 25 mL/min/1.73 m2. Results CH50, AP50, C3, and B were not significantly different from the control group in both the CAPD and preterminal groups. Factors C1q (p=0.01) and C4, C3d, D, and P (p<0.001) were higher in the CAPD group in comparison to the normal control group. The factors D (p<0.001) and P (p=0.02) were also elevated in the preterminal group. For the measured factors there was no significant difference between the CAPD group and the preterminal group. Conclusions There is no deficiency of complement in children treated with CAPD. High levels of C3d and D can be explained by the reduction of their elimination by the kidney. The increased levels of the other factors are presumably due to increased synthesis in renal failure. This does not seem to be caused by CAPD.

The aim of this study was to identify the impact of bedtime, wake time, sleep duration, sleep-onset latency, and sleep quality on depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation amongst Japanese freshmen.Methods. This cross-sectional data was derived from the baseline survey of the Enhancement of Q-University Students Intelligence (EQUSITE) study conducted from May to June, 2010. A total of 2,631 participants were recruited and completed the following self-reported questionnaires: the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), and the original Health Support Questionnaires developed by the EQUSITE study research team.Results. Of 1,992 participants eligible for analysis, 25.5% (n=507) reported depressive symptoms (CES-D total score ≥ 16), and 5.8% (n=115) reported suicidal ideation. The present study showed that late bedtime (later than 01:30), sleep-onset latency (≥30 minutes), and poor sleep quality showed a marginally significant association with depressive symptoms. Poor sleep quality was seen to predict suicidal ideation even after adjusting for depressive symptoms.Conclusion. The current study has important implications for the role of bedtime in the prevention of depressive symptoms. Improving sleep quality may prevent the development of depressive symptoms and reduce the likelihood of suicidal ideation.

Abstract:

Purpose – The following article is a “Q & A interview” conducted by Joanne Pransky of Industrial Robot Journal as a method to impart the combined technological, business and personal experience of a prominent, robotic industry engineer-turned successful business leader, regarding the commercialization and challenges of bringing technological inventions to market while overseeing a company. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The interviewee is Dr Martin Buehler, Executive R & D Imagineer, at Walt Disney Imagineering. Dr Buehler is a global expert in robot manipulation and mobile robots and has led the innovative R & D and product development for some of the world’s top robot organizations. In this interview, Dr Buehler shares some of his personal and business experiences of his 25-year journey. Findings – Dr Buehler studied electrical engineering at the University of Karlsruhe and received the MSc and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Yale University, and after a PostDoc at MIT’s Leglab in locomotion, he became a professor at McGill University in 1991, with tenure since 1997. His research focused on dynamic grasping, direct drive motor control and legged robots. From 2003 to 2008, Dr Buehler was Director of Robotics at Boston Dynamics, and he was Director of Research at iRobot Corporation from 2008 to 2011. He served as VP and General Manager of Hospital Robots for Vecna Technologies from 2011 to 2013 and Senior Director of R & D and Director, R & D Center Munich for Covidien from 2013-2015. Originality/value – Dr Buehler is best known in the academic world for his expertise in “intermittent dynamical” robotic tasks, such as dynamic manipulation and dynamically stable legged locomotion. His research led to multiple breakthroughs in legged robot projects like BigDog and RHex. In the corporate world, Buehler’s passion is to translate robotics technologies into successful product solutions. He does this by the implementation of key management strategies including Scrum and rapid and systematic experimental iteration. In addition to holding several patents, Dr Buehler is an Advisory Editorial Board member for the International Journal of Robotics Research and formerly served for ten years as the Associate Editor for the Journal of Field Robotics. Dr Buehler is a bestowed IEEE Fellow and was the recipient of the prestigious Robotics Industry Association’s 2012 Engelberger Award for Technology.

Abstract:

Introduction. Among the different groups of drugs, diuretics are one the most popular classes that have been used for treatment of cardiovascular system and kidney diseases. At the same time, synthetic diuretics which are widely used, cause large amounts of side effects, such as violation of electrolyte, acid-base and water balances, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Therefore, it is important to search for individual compounds of plant origin – potential pharmaceutical substances for the treatment of urinary tract diseases. In this study individual compounds were isolated from the terrestrial parts of Ononis arvensis L. and Solidago canadensis L. The diuretic activity of the summary extracts of Ononis arvensis and Solidago canadensis has previously been proven.Aim. Method development for the isolation of individual compounds, using modern physicochemical methods of analysis, from the terrestrial parts of Ononis arvensis and Solidago canadensis and the elucidation of their structure.Materials and methods. Aerial parts of Ononis arvensis and Solidago canadensis were collected in the Saint Petersburg State Chemical-Pharmaceutical University (SPCPU) Nursery Garden of Medicinal Plants (Leningrad region, Vsevolozhsky district, Priozersk highway, 38 km) in August 2019 and identified by Dr. Goncharov Mikhail of the Saint-Petersburg chemical-pharmaceutical university, Saint-Petersburg, Russia. Fraction analysis were preformed with analytical high-performance liquid chromatography using a LC-20 Prominence (Shimadzu corp., Japan) with a SPD-M20A diode-array detector. Isolation of individual compounds was carried out by preparative high-performance liquid chromatography using a Smartline (Knauer, Germany). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR experiments (Bruker Avance III 400 MHz) along with HR-ESI-MS (Bruker Micromass Q-TOF).Results and discussion. Using the developed methods, from the aerial part of the field restharrow (O. arvensis) we managed to isolate and characterised three individual compounds (1-3). Compounds 1 and 2 are isloflavonoids – pseudobaptigenin-7-О-ß-D-glucopyranoside and formononetin-7-О-ß-D-glucopyranoside, respectively. Compound (3) is a flavonoid – kaempferol-3-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (astragalin). All compounds were isolated for O. arvansis for the first time. Along with this, four individual compounds (4-7) were isolated from the aerial part of the canadian goldenrod (S. canadensis), namely, quercetin-3-O-ß-D-6''-acetylglucopyranoside, isoramnetin-3-О-ß-D-rutinoside (narcissin), quercetin-3-О-rutinoside (rutin) and quercetin, respectively.Conclusion. As a result of the research, methods have been developed for the isolation of 7 individual compounds, using modern physicochemical methods of analysis, from the aerial parts of Ononis arvensis and Solidago canadensis, the structures of all the isolated compounds were elucidated. Future assessment of the isolated compounds biological activity is presumed.

Abstract:

Objective During continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), activation of complement in the peritoneal cavity may theoretically occur, with inappropriately high or low levels of certain complement factors in dialysate as a consequence. In a group of children on CAPD, it was tested whether levels of a number of complement factors in dialysate were in the range that was predicted on the basis of their molecular weight. Design Serum and dialysate levels of C1 q, C3, C4, C3d, B, D, and P were measured after a night dwell in children on CAPD. Simultaneously, four non-complement proteins (β2-microglobulin, albumin, IgG, and α2macroglobulin) were also measured in dialysate and serum. Assuming a linear relationship between the log base 10 of the dialysate/serum ratio of these non-complement proteins and the log base 10 of their molecular weight, the expected ratios of all complement factors were determined. The differences between actual and predicted ratios were tested using a modified t-test, taking into account the inaccuracy of the estimate. Setting University hospital. Patients A group of 14 children on CAPD, with a median age of 7.8 years (range 2.1–13.2). These children had been on CAPD for a median period of 42.4 months (range 0.4 89.1). Results The ratios of factor D (p < 0.001) and C3d (p = 0.035) were elevated, whereas those of C3 (p < 0.001), C4 (p < 0.001), and factor P (p = 0.012) were decreased. Conclusions Relatively low dialysate/serum ratios of C4, C3, and factor P could be caused by intraperitoneal consumption of complement. High levels of C3d are compatible with this. High dialysate/serum ratios of factor D indicate intraperitoneal production of factor D. These results provide evidence for activation of complement in the peritoneal cavity in children on CAPD. A further reduction of already low levels of complement factors in dialysate as a result of this may impair host defense.

Abstract:

Leptosphaeria maculans (Desmaz.) Ces. & de Not., causal agent of blackleg of canola (Brassica napus L.), was initially placed in several pathogenicity groups (PG) on the basis of the interaction phenotypes (IP) of L. maculans isolates on the differential canola cvs. Westar (W), Glacier (G), and Quinta (Q) (4). PG1 isolates are weakly virulent and PG2, PG3, and PG4 isolates are highly virulent. In Manitoba, the L. maculans population consists mainly of PG2 isolates (virulent on W and avirulent on G and Q), a few PG1 isolates (avirulent on W, G, and Q), and PGT (virulent on W and Q, but avirulent on G) (3). Since the blackleg fungus is known to have a high level of evolutionary potential, the Oilseed Pathology Laboratory at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada, examines the pathogenic variability of L. maculans isolates from the Canadian Prairies and North Dakota each year. During 2002, the presence of PG3 (virulent on W and G and avirulent on Q) was reported in Manitoba (1). During 2003, a canola field located at La Riviere, Manitoba, 200 km southwest of Winnipeg, was found to be severely affected by blackleg. Stubble from this field was arbitrarily collected in mid-April 2004, and 98 single-pycnidia pure cultures were obtained by isolating fungi from surface-sterilized (2% sodium hypochlorite), infested residue, cultured on V8 agar at room temperature under cool-white florescent light for 24 h. Pycnidiospores were harvested after 14 days of incubation using the Miracloth filtering method (1). PG testing was performed using the three differential cultivars in the greenhouse. Known PG2, 3, and 4 isolates, 86-12, Liffole-6, and PL30.2, respectively, were included as positive controls. For each of the 98 isolates, 12 7-day-old cotyledons of each differential cultivar grown in Metro Mix were wound-inoculated with 10 μl of a pycnidiospore suspension (1 × 107 per ml) (1). Inoculated plants were maintained in the greenhouse (16/21°C night/day and a 16-h photoperiod with cool-white florescent light). The experiment was repeated three times. Disease severity on cotyledons was assessed 12 days after inoculation with a 0 to 9 scale (0 to 2 = resistant; 3 to 6 = intermediate; and 7 to 9 = susceptible). Of the 98 isolates tested, five were PG1, 51 were PG2, 24 were PG3, 13 were PGT, and five were PG4. The isolates classified as PG4 gave IP reactions of 7 to 9, 7 to 9, and 6.6 to 8.2, on W, G, and Q, respectively. PG3 was reported one year ago, but highly virulent isolates belonging to PG4 have not been previously detected in Manitoba. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the occurrence of PG4 isolates of L. maculans, and the first report of PG4 causing canola blackleg in Manitoba. The appearance of PG4 may be evidence of pathogen population changes occurring under high-selection-pressure exerted by resistance genes in commercial cultivars (2), or through importation of PG4 isolates with canola seed. Abstract:

Introduction The D-dimer has been validated in diagnostic venous thromboembolism (VTE) algorithms. The high sensitivity of the assay allows for safe exclusion of VTE in patients with low clinical pre-test probability and a negative D-dimer. The Wells score for Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) and Pulmonary Embolism (PE) are validated pre-test probability tools which help guide physicians on when to order a D-dimer in patients with suspected VTE. However, we suspect these scoring tools are often under-utilized by physicians leading to inappropriate D-dimer ordering and subsequent interventions. We sought to explore the landscape of D-dimer ordering at our institution. Methods We conducted a retrospective chart review of 482 patients in whom a D-dimer had been ordered over a 3-month period at the University of Alberta Hospital, a tertiary care teaching hospital in Edmonton, Canada. Charts were reviewed for patient demographics, specialty of ordering physician, apparent indication for ordering, patient risk factors for VTE and evidence of a pre-test probability (PTP) calculation. WIf no PTP score was documented, we retrospectively calculated Wells DVT or PE scores. VTE was deemed likely with a calculated Wells score for DVT ≧2 or Wells score for PE &gt;4. In the case of high PTP for PE, patients should go directly to imaging and a D-dimer should not be performed. A cut off of ≥ 0.50 mg/L was deemed a positive D-dimer (STA-LIATEST). We also reviewed subsequent investigations thought to be influenced by interpretation of the D-dimer including: ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) and pulmonary angiography (CTPA) scans, and upper and lower extremity doppler ultrasound studies. We then used multivariable logistic regression analysis to evaluate the proportion of patients who received imaging despite a low PTP and negative D-dimer. Results Seventy eight percent of D-dimers were ordered by Emergency physicians while 15.3% were drawn on admitted patients, and 5.8% in the outpatient setting. The indication for ordering was unknown in 87 (17.5%) of cases. Pre-test probability scores were documented in only 8 (1.6%) of cases. All of those documented were the Wells PE score. When Wells DVT and PE scores were calculated retrospectively, 30.0% and 17.1% (87 cases) were deemed 'likely' for VTE, respectively. However, imaging was performed in 172 cases (34.6%), including in 36 cases despite a negative D-dimer result and low PTP. In contrast, 68 cases (17.2%) had a D-dimer performed with a high Wells PTP for PE despite the recommendation to proceed directly to imaging. VTE (either DVT or PE) was confirmed by imaging in 32 (18.6%) of cases, the majority (53.1%) had a high retrospective PTP. Conclusions Inappropriate ordering and interpretation of D-dimers remains a significant problem despite the implementation of clinical guidelines and pre-test probability algorithms, namely the Wells score for DVT and PE meant to guide physicians. This leads to unnecessary cost, radiation exposure, and prolonged contact with the health care system for patients. This suggests the need for quality improvement initiatives which draw physician's attention to pre-test probability tools which can curbing subsequent inappropriate investigations and improve patient care. Abstract:

Flow over a drop structure is a form of free overfall called hydraulic drop. Hydraulic drop changes the nature of flow abruptly from sub-critical to super-critical condition. Rapidly varied flow analysis is a complex phenomenon and involves remarkable characteristics. Some of the drop structures constructed in Sindh and Punjab provinces of Pakistan had gone through diverse failures, consequential in interruption of water supply to irrigation fields encountering substantial economic loss. In the present study experiments were carried out in the hydraulic laboratory of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology on round edged drop structure fitted in a horizontal rectangular flume (channel model). Data regarding hydraulic drop and hydraulic jump characteristics were collected during the experiment. The observed data included: flow discharge (Q), radius of rounded edge drop structure (r), height of the structure (h), hydraulic drop length (Ld), hydraulic jump length (Lj), depth of flow at toe of the jump (Y1) and tailwater depth (Y2). Applying dimensional analysis, the non-dimensional parameters of the observed data were calculated. Using statistical analysis, empirical relationships among the non-dimensional parameters were established for the appropriate design of the drop structure. The research results showed that the length and depth indices are functions of D=q2gh3 and r/h values. It was also found that for rounded-edge drop structure, the length of the stilling basin (LSB) reduces as r/h ratio increases

Abstract:

Purpose – This paper aims to present a “Q&A interview” conducted by Joanne Pransky of Industrial Robot Journal as a method to impart the combined technological, business and personal experiences of a prominent robotic industry engineer-turned entrepreneur regarding the evolution, commercialisation and challenges of bringing a technological invention to market. Design/methodology/approach – The interviewee is Rich Walker, the Managing Director at the Shadow Robot Company in London, UK. Rich Walker joined the Shadow team before going to University, and in this interview, he describes his 25-year journey with the company. Findings – While he was studying mathematics at Cambridge, Rich Walker's passion for cutting edge robotics led him to write software in 1989, unpaid, as part of a team at the pioneering the Shadow Robot Company. Walker was soon involved in developing robotic hands based on pneumatic muscles, which resulted in eight patents, with Walker named as one of the inventors. Walker and the small team have since grown Shadow to become a thriving global business that designs and manufactures state-of-the-art anthropomorphic robot hands and related systems, with 20 R&D and production engineers in London, Brest and Shanghai. Originality/value – Walker's experiences with a small entrepreneurial robot start-up has led him not only to become a leader at Shadow for new robotics applications but he is also active in developing and implementing European projects, and he consults as an expert in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and innovators.

Concurrently with the rapid development in digital society, the demand for communication skills was clear in childhood. Early childhood education needs to pay attention to children's speech skills development. This study aims to determine the effect of cognitive style and attachment on the ability to speak in early childhood speech development. The method used is a 2 x 2 factorial comparison design which is divided into two groups namely independent and dependent fields involving 138 samples. Re- search findings about differences in the ability to speak early childhood who have independent field cognitive style and children who have field dependent cognitive style in groups of children with high attachment obtained (A2B1), obtained Q count = 9.39 and Q table (0.05; 4: 10) = 4 , 33. 4). Differences in the ability to speak early childhood who have an independent field cognitive style and children who have a field dependent cognitive style in groups of children with low attachment obtained (A2B2), ob- tained Q count = 4.39 and Q table (0.05; 4: 10) = 4 , 33. It show that early children who have independent field cognitive style have higher speech skills scores than early children who have field dependent cog- nitive style while early children who are independent field cognitive style with low attachment have lower speech skills scores than early childhood the field dependent cognitive style with low attachment. Abstract:

Background:Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects the sacroiliac joints and the spine, resulting in decline in quality of life[1,2]. Poor QoL is significantly related to high disease activity[3]. However, there is no systematic report on which prognosis indicators are affected by disease activity in AS patients.Objectives:This study aimed to evaluate the patient-reported outcome measures and health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) in AS patients defined on the basis of the Bath Spondylitis Ankylosing Disease Activity Index (BASDAI).Methods:204 AS patients were involved in this study. A serious of questionnaires were used to overall assess AS patients, which include: Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI), Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), the 10 cm Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Health Assessment Questionnaire-Disability Index (HAQ-DI), the Fatigue Severity Scale(FSS) and the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36). Independent samples t-test, Mann–Whitney U-test, Chi-square analysis and Pearson /Spearman correlation were used to analyze the data.Results:The results demonstrated 31.4% AS patients were in active disease activity stage. Active AS patients were older, unemployed, and had less exercise therapy than stable AS patients. Besides, AS patients with active disease activity presented more severe pain(P<0.001), poor physical function(P<0.001) and spinal mobility(P<0.001). They were more anxious(P<0.001), depressed(P<0.001) and had more sleep disturbance(P=0.001). Compared with active AS patients, stable AS patients had more leukocytes(P=0.040), lymphocytes(P=0.002), erythrocytes(P=0.001) and hemoglobin(P<0.001). Abstract:

Quercus glauca Thunb. (syn. Cyclobalanopsis glauca (Thunb.) Oerst.), known as ring-cupped oak or Japanese blue oak, is a dominant tree species commonly found in evergreen forests in East Asia (2). In May 2012, hundreds of Q. glauca were found heavily affected by a powdery mildew in several locations of Jeju Islands, Korea. Symptoms on overwintered leaves appeared as circular to irregular blackish violet to dark brown felt-like growths with numerous chasmothecia on abaxial leaf surfaces. New infections on current-year leaves started in early summer and were characterized by typical white patches with abundant sporulation on abaxial leaf surfaces. In early autumn, with formation of special aerial hyphae and without further sporulation, the patches turned light brown to brown. Formation of chasmothecia was noticed from late autumn. The adaxial leaf surface was free of powdery mildew growths and exhibited yellowing and discoloration. Voucher specimens were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Special aerial hyphae were falcate to curved, aseptate, at first hyaline, later deep brown to purplish brown, thick-walled, and 80 to 140 × 6 to 15 μm. Conidiophores were 175 to 245 × 10 to 12 μm, and produced 2 to 4 immature conidia in chains with a sinuate outline. Foot-cells of conidiophores were cylindrical and 80 to 120 μm long. Conidia were lemon- to barrel-shaped, 26 to 35 × 17 to 24 μm with a length/width ratio of 1.2 to 1.6, and devoid of fibrosin bodies. Primary conidia were apically conical and basally subtruncate. Germ tubes produced in the lateral to perihilar position of conidia were long and slender (3 μm wide). Chasmothecia were scattered or gregarious, partly embedded with special aerial hyphae, dark brown, spherical, 55 to 70 μm in diameter, and contained a single ascus. Chasmothecial peridia consisted of two layers. Exoperidia (outer layer) were composed of dark brown, polygonal cells 10 to 20 μm wide. Endoperidia (inner layer) consisted of hyaline, polygonal cells 10 to 15 μm wide. Appendages were basally attached, mycelioid, rare or few, and pale brown to rusty brown. Asci were short stalked, 55 to 72 × 35 to 46 μm, had a terminal oculus 10 to 20 μm wide, and contained 8 ascospores. Ascospores were oblong-elliptical, 22 to 27 × 10 to 12.5 μm, subhyaline, and contained 1 or 2 oil drops. The specific measurements and characteristics (especially falcate aerial hyphae) were consistent with those of Cystotheca wrightii Berk. & M.A. Curtis (1). Fungal DNA was extracted by the Chelex method. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA of KUS-F27309 was amplified with primers ITS5/P3 and sequenced directly (4). The resulting 589-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KF735066). A BLAST search in GenBank showed that the Korean isolate had 100% hom*ology with C. wrightii on Q. glauca from Japan (AB000932). Powdery mildews of Q. glauca associated with C. wrightii have been known in Japan, Taiwan, and China (1,3), but not in Korea. Abstract:

The immediate impulse-response of a confined incompressible fluid is characterized by inertance. For a vessel with one inlet and outlet, this is a single quantity; for multiple ports the generalization is a singular reciprocal inertance matrix which acts on the port-impulses to give the corresponding inflows. The reciprocal inertance coefficients are defined by the boundary fluxes of potential flows. Green's identity converts these coefficients to domain integrals of kinetic energy. For a system discretized with finite elements, a third method is proposed for computing reciprocal inertance coefficients which requires only the stiffness matrix and the solution vectors and no numerical differentiation. Abstract:

The article covers the issues related to the development of reading skills of the students majoring/minoring in English and Chinese (as non-native languages). In the backdrop of linguistic differences between English and Chinese, this action research was conducted to investigate the components of the reading skills, which are to be developed within the Bachelor programs. The primary purpose of the article is to analyze the methodological background for teaching Ukrainian students to perceive information from authentic texts. The methods of induction and deduction enabled us to analyze and generalize the theoretical bases for the investigated topic, to systemize the results of the study (the reading tactics and strategies, classification of reading activities). The study was based on focused observation using the register as a tool for data collecting for two semesters each in three groups of third-year students at Ushynsky University. The total sample size was 54. The article presents an analysis of difficulties in reading English and Chinese texts: 1) phonological level – differences in sound pronunciation (English: /T/, /D/ /w/, /N/, /x/, etc.; Chinese: the alveolo-palatal consonants j, q, x; affricates zh, z; consonant r, etc.), the phonetic phenomena (English: nasal plosion, lateral plosion, loss of plosion, assimilation, reduction/elision, etc.; Chinese: tone, erization); 2) lexical level – conversion (in English) and transposition (in Chinese), hom*onymy, polysemy; 3) grammatical level – the division of lexicon into parts of speech, different word order in English and Chinese sentences, (non)segmentation of English and Chinese syntagms/clauses/compound sentences, use of tenses, etc. The article contains some recommendations for English and Chinese reading classrooms.

Then using a general framework of the three-interval method, we establish exponential decay estimates for contact instantons $(w,j)$ of the triad $(M,\unicode[STIX]{x1D706},J)$, with $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$ a Morse–Bott contact form and $J$ a CR-almost complex structure adapted to $Q$, under the condition that the asymptotic charge of $(w,j)$ at the associated puncture vanishes.We also apply the three-interval method to the symplectization case and provide an alternative approach via tensorial calculations to exponential decay estimates in the Morse–Bott case for the pseudoholomorphic curves on the symplectization of contact manifolds. This was previously established by Bourgeois (A Morse–Bott approach to contact hom*ology, Ph.D. dissertation, Stanford University, 2002) (resp. by Bao (On J-holomorphic curves in almost complex manifolds with asymptotically cylindrical ends, Pacific J. Math. 278(2) (2015), 291–324)), by using special coordinates, for the cylindrical (resp. for the asymptotically cylindrical) ends. The exponential decay result for the Morse–Bott case is an essential ingredient in the setup of the moduli space of pseudoholomorphic curves which plays a central role in contact hom*ology and symplectic field theory (SFT).

Abstract:

This article begins by asserting that the distinction between high and middlebrow literary texts rests fundamentally not on literary merit or cultural hierarchies but on the culture and practices of reading as they changed and developed in the first half of the twentieth century. It explores the difficulties of drawing a firm dividing line between high and middlebrow experienced by contemporary critical and cultural commentators such as Cyril Connolly, Q. D. Leavis and George Orwell, and argues that what was crucial for these commentators was not so much the precise boundaries they drew as the fact of drawing them. It suggests that we need to find new ways of thinking about the literature of the first half of the twentieth century that avoid simply replicating the snobberies and anxieties of that period. Following a suggestion in Michel de Certeau's The Practice of Everyday Life, it examines the reading bodies implied by the highbrow and the middlebrow in order to tease out some of the wider cultural implications of the battle of the brows. Firstly, it suggests that the difference between high and middlebrow texts, at its most basic, might simply be simply a matter of sitting forward or sitting back: of those texts that are read at a desk and those read while relaxing. It proposes an ethnography of the two groups of readers, and considers the culture of leisure that shapes middlebrow reading practices, and the institution of university English Literature that shapes those of the highbrow. Finally, it looks at the places and times where these distinctions start to break down, examining the reading surveys conducted by Mass Observation, and considering the phenomenon of Penguin Books and suggesting that an examination of the lived experience of readers presents a picture that is more various, complicated and resistant than neat theorising would allow.

Abstract:

Objectives: Patient preference studies are increasingly used to inform decision-making during the medical product lifecycle but are rarely used to inform early stages of drug development. The primary aim of this study is to quantify treatment preferences of patients with neuromuscular disorders, which represent serious and debilitating conditions with limited or no treatment options available. Methods: This quantitative patient preferences study was designed as an online survey, with a cross-over design. This study will target two different diseases from the neuromuscular disorders disease group, myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) and mitochondrial myopathies (MM). Despite having different physio-pathological pathways both DM1 and MM manifest in a clinically similar manner and may benefit from similar treatment options. The sample will be stratified into three subgroups: two patient groups differentiated by age of symptom onset and one caregivers group. Each subgroup will be randomly assigned to complete two of three different preference elicitation methods at two different time points: Q-methodology survey, discrete choice experiment, and best-worst scaling type 2, allowing cross-comparisons of the results across each study time within participants and within elicitation methods. Additional variables such as sociodemographic, clinical and health literacy will be collected to enable analysis of potential heterogeneity. Ethics and Dissemination: This study protocol has undergone ethical review and approval by the Newcastle University R&D Ethics Committee (Ref: 15169/2018). All participants will be invited to give electronic informed consent to take part in the study prior accessing the online survey. All electronic data will be anonymised prior analysis. This study is part of the Patient Preferences in Benefit-Risk Assessments during the Drug Life Cycle (IMI-PREFER) project, a public-private collaborative research project aiming to develop expert and evidence-based recommendations on how and when patient preferences can be assessed and used to inform medical product decision making.

Abstract:

The results of laboratory studies of the proposed drip irrigation system are given. Five different types of droppers have been investigated to quantify the hydraulic characteristics. The dependences of the uniformity of water flow through droppers with a change in the working pressure in the system are obtained. Laboratory studies of the experimental facility were carried out at the training and demonstration center of Kazan State Agrarian University. The experimental installation consists of a storage tank, a submersible pump, five P.V.C. main pipes with a length of 3 m and a diameter of 16 mm, stop valves of a drip line, pressure gauges, a main stop valve, a collector line, a return line, and droppers. Before starting the experiments, air was removed from the system and pressure at the inlet to each main pipe was adjusted to the required value. Immediately under each drip, 500 ml volumetric containers were placed to determine the volume of leaked water in two minutes. Significant uniformity of water consumption and the smallest deviations from the specified nominal flow rate were achieved with type A and C droppers (with pressure compensation) at an operating pressure of 0.2 MPa; with type B droppers (also with pressure compensation), water flow uniformity decreased with increasing pressure. The results of the research show that pressure-compensated droppers are less sensitive to pressure changes with an operating pressure of 0.35 MPa. Water consumption (q) for type A droppers increased by 5.27%, B - by 27.3% and C - by 9.1%. Dropper type D and E have the lowest uniformity of water flow at different pressure levels. Under actual irrigation conditions, it is recommended to install pressure gauges not only in the collector line, but also on the main pipes (preferably at the end of each main pipe) to determine the differential and pressure losses in the system.

Marian devotion has reinforced the construction of collective, but also of individual identities. Abstract:

Science and Technology develop very fast in every aspect of life, including in the aspect of education. As the development of science and technology, guiding teachers to be able to make use various kinds of creative and innovative learning media in learning process at school is needed in order to increase the effectivity of the learning process which will have impact on the students’ learning motivation and learning outcomes. According to the explanation, learning multimedia needs to be developed in order to increase the students’ learning motivation and learning outcomes. This research is a research and development (R&D), which is then modified by using Tessmer formative evaluation. The analysis results show that the web-based learning multimedia for lithosphere material has been proven its eligibility, that the web-based learning is valid, practical, to be used in learning process and is effective in increasing students learning motivation and learning outcomes. Thyroid hormone induces the generation of a novel putative protein in piscine ovarian follicle that stimulates the conversion of pregnenolone to progesterone. Eur J Endocrinol 1996:134:128–35. ISSN 0840–4643. Ovarian follicles were collected from the perch belonging to the vitellogenic stage and incubated in vitro for 4 h in the absence (control) or presence of triiodothyronine (T3). Addition of T3 (40 ng/ml) to the follicle incubation caused a two-fold increase of [3H] pregnenolone conversion to radiolabelled progesterone (P4) as compared to the control. The increase in P4 formation in the ovarian follicle could be blocked completely by the inhibitors of protein synthesis, actinomycin D and cycloheximide (50 μg/ ml), suggesting a protein or peptide mediator of the T3 stimulatory effect. To search for this mediator, ovarian follicles from the control or T3 incubate were hom*ogenized and ultracentrifuged and different fractions were added separately to fresh follicle incubations. Only the 100 000g supernatant from T3 incubate showed a significant (p < 0.01) increase in P4 formation, while the corresponding supernatant from control follicle incubations had no such stimulatory effect. Trypsin or heat destroyed this augmentory effect. Based on its ability to stimulate the conversion of radiolabelled pregnenolone to P4 in the ovarian follicle, the T3-induced protein (TIP) was purified to hom*ogeneity by employing Sephadex G-75 gel filtration, FPLC Mono-Q and FPLC Superose-6 chromatography. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of purified TIP showed it to be a 52 K monomer protein. Addition of TIP in increasing concentrations to follicle incubations caused a linear increase in P4 formation. Experiments with radiolabelled TIP ([125 I] TIP) indicate its entry through the follicular cell membrane within the limited period of incubation. Results suggest that TIP activates ovarian 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme, thus effecting a greater conversion of pregnenolone to P4. S. AbstractFollowing the revision of the French dietary guidelines in 2017, the Programme National Nutrition Santé – guidelines score (PNNS-GS), built upon previous recommendations released in 2001, needed to be updated. This cross-sectional study thus aimed to develop and validate the PNNS-GS2, a predefined food-based dietary index based on the 2017-revised French nutritional guidelines. A total of 80 965 participants recruited among French adults (≥18 years old) in the NutriNet-Santé web-based prospective cohort were included. Collected data included repeated 24 h-dietary records over a 2-year period, sociodemographic and, for 16 938 subjects, clinical and biological data. Weighting and cut-offs of the PNNS-GS2 components were collegially arbitrated by nutrition experts who participated in the 2017 revision of the guidelines. Sociodemographic, nutritional and clinical and biological factors were investigated according to quintiles (Q) of PNNS-GS2 (theoretical ranging −17 to +13·5). Mean PNNS-GS2 was 2·1 (sd 3·1) in women and −0·3 (sd 3·6) in men. Higher PNNS-GS2 (higher adherence to 2017 dietary guidelines) was positively associated with (mean difference between Q5 and Q1 in women/men) age (+8·4/+4·7 years), education (+3·9/+7·4 % of university level), physical activity (+13·3/+3·5 % of ≥60 min/d) and non-smoking (+9·7/+13·7 %), and was negatively associated with mean blood pressure (−3·0/−2·8 mmHg), plasma LDL-cholesterol (−0·07/−0·06 g/l) and TAG (−0·10/−0·16 g/l) concentrations. Higher PNNS-GS2 was also associated with higher intake of favourable nutrients, e.g. n-3 PUFA (+0·2/+0·2 % of energy intake), fibres (+8·7/+10·7 g) and vitamin C (+36·6/+43·8 mg). Associations between PNNS-GS2 and sociodemographic and nutritional factors arguing for its validation are coherent. Further studies are needed to evaluate its association with mortality and morbidity.

Abstract:

Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz, known as densefruit pittany, is a perennial herbal plant belonging to the Rutaceae. In Oriental medicine, this plant is used for treatment of various ailments (4). Since the white and purple striped flowers and glossy leaves are of aesthetic value, the plant is popular in gardens throughout Korea. In July 2012, a leaf spot was observed on hundreds of D. dasycarpus with nearly 100% incidence in a garden in Gapyeong County, Korea. Lesions on leaves reaching up to 20 mm in diameter were circular to irregular, brown to dark brown, then becoming zonate with age, and finally fading to grayish brown in the center with a reddish brown margin. The disease caused premature defoliation and reduced plant vigor as well as aesthetic value. In June 2014, the same symptoms were found on D. dasycarpus in a nursery in Jinju City, Korea. Representative samples were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). Pycnidia on lesions were epiphyllous, immersed or semi-immersed in host tissue, light brown to olive brown, and 90 to 210 μm in diameter. Ostioles were 15 to 30 μm wide and surrounded by a ring of darker cells. Conidia were hyaline, smooth, ellipsoidal to nearly reniform, straight to mildly curved, aseptate or rarely medianly 1-septate with age, 5.5 to 9.6 × 1.8 to 3.6 μm, and contained small oil drops. These characteristics were consistent with the previous descriptions of Phoma dictamnicola Boerema, Gruyter & Noordel. (1,2). A monoconidial isolate was cultured on potato dextrose agar plates and deposited in the Korea Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC46948). Morphological identification of the fungus was confirmed by molecular data. Genomic DNA was extracted using a DNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified using the ITS1/ITS4 primers and sequenced. The resulting sequence of 505 bp was deposited in GenBank (Accession No. KM047023). A BLAST search showed that the ITS sequence shared >99% similarity with that of P. dictamnicola (GU237877). For the pathogenicity tests, inoculum was prepared by harvesting conidia from 30-day-old cultures of KACC46948 and a conidial suspension (2 × 106 conidia/ml) was sprayed onto leaves of five healthy seedlings. Five seedlings were sprayed with sterile distilled water, serving as controls. The plants were covered with transparent plastic bags for 48 h in a 25°C glasshouse with a 12-h photoperiod. After 10 days, typical leaf spot symptoms started to develop on the leaves of the inoculated plants. The fungus, P. dictamnicola, was re-isolated from those lesions, confirming Koch's postulates. No symptoms were observed on control plants. Previously, Phoma leaf spot on Dictamnus spp. has been reported in the Netherlands and North America (3) and recently in China (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of leaf spot on D. dasycarpus caused by P. dictamnicola in Korea. Our observations suggest that low humidity with good ventilation as well as removal of infected leaves and plant debris might be main strategies for preventing this disease. References: (1) Q. Abstract:

Oriental white oak, Quercus aliena Blume, is native to East Asia including Korea. It is one of the major deciduous tree species in natural forests in Korea. In May 2012, several hundred trees were found to be heavily damaged by a previously unknown leaf disease in a forest near Songjiho Lake in Goseong County of central Korea. Leaf symptoms began as small, water-soaked, pale greenish to grayish lesions, which enlarged to follow the veins or midribs and to be bounded by them, often killing part of the leaf. Leaf distortion and blight resulted in the later stage of disease development. A number of grayish brown to nearly black acervuli were formed on the lesions, especially on the midribs and veins. Acervuli were mostly hypophyllous, intraepidermal, erumpent, circular to ellipsoid in outline, cushion-like, and 70 to 220 μm in diameter. Conidia (n = 30) were elliptical to fusiform-elliptical, occasionally obclavate, aguttulate or guttulate, hyaline, aseptate, and 7.5 to 20 × 5 to 7.5 μm (mean 14.6 × 6.1 μm). These morphological characteristics of the fungus were consistent with the description of conidial state of Apiognomonia errabunda (Roberge ex Desm.) Höhn. (3,4). Voucher specimens were deposited in the Korea University Herbarium (KUS). An isolate obtained from KUS-F26690 was deposited in the Korean Agricultural Culture Collection (Accession No. KACC46842). Fungal DNA was extracted with DNeasy Plant Mini DNA Extraction Kits (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). The complete internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified with the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. The resulting 549-bp sequence was deposited in GenBank (KC426947). This showed >99% similarity with sequences of A. errabunda (AJ888475 to 888477). For pathogenicity test, inoculum was prepared by harvesting conidia from 4-week-old cultures on potato dextrose agar. A conidial suspension (1 × 106 conidia/ml) was sprayed onto young leaves of three potted seedlings. Three seedlings treated with sterile distilled water served as controls. Plants were covered with plastic bags to maintain 100% relative humidity for 24 h and then kept in a greenhouse (20 to 26°C and 60 to 80% RH). After 26 days, typical leaf spot symptoms, identical to the ones observed in the field, developed on the inoculated leaves. No symptoms were observed on controls. A. errabunda was reisolated from the lesions of inoculated plants, fulfilling Koch's postulates. Oak anthracnose associated with A. errabunda (including A. quercina) has been recorded in Europe and North America (1,4). Oak anthracnose of evergreen Quercus glauca Thunb. (syn. Cyclobalanopsis glauca (Thunb.) Oerst.) associated with A. supraseptata in Japan is not related to this disease (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of oak anthracnose of Q. aliena globally and also the first finding of A. errabunda in Asia as well as in Korea. This pathogen is known as one of the major forest pathogens in oak stand in Europe and North America (3). Pending further studies, including a risk assessment, A. errabunda may be considered as a potentially new and serious threat in native and planted ranges of Q. aliena in Korea. References: (1) D. F. Abstract:

Spectral investigations in the UV-VIS range of selected Al alloys and composites, used in the construction of armament components as well as drones, were performed using LIBS technique. Two Nd:YAG lasers were applied: a short pulse 4 ns 60 mJ laser and a long pulse 200/400 (up to 1000) us (~ 2/4 up to 10 J) laser. In experiments with a short laser pulse only atomic spectra were observed while for long pulses, also molecular transitions have been recorded. Abstract:

Purpose The following paper is a “Q&A interview” conducted by Joanne Pransky of Industrial Robot Journal as a method to impart the combined technological, business and personal experience of a prominent, robotic industry engineer-turned entrepreneur regarding his pioneering efforts in the industrial robot industry and the commercialization and challenges of bringing robotic inventions to market. This paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The interviewee is Brian Carlisle, President and Co-founder of Precise Automation, a robot manufacturer that specializes in collaborative robots. Carlisle discusses the highlights of his 40-year career that led to groundbreaking innovations in small parts assembly and handling robots, along with some of the challenges. He also shares his thoughts on the future of the industry. Findings Brian Carlisle received his BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. After Stanford, Carlisle and colleague Dr Bruce Shimano worked for Vicarm, a three-person company started by robotics pioneer Victor Scheinman. Vicarm was sold to Unimation and Carlisle became Unimation’s Director of R&D where he and his team developed the PUMA™ series of electric robots and grew sales from $0 to $40m in five years. In 1983, Carlisle and Shimano co-founded Adept Technology and as its CEO for 20 years, Carlisle grew Adept to over $100m in robot sales. In 2004, Carlisle co-founded with Shimano, Precise Automation, and is the President and CEO. Originality/value Brian Carlisle is a pioneer of the small parts assembly and handling robot. He was one of the key members of the team that developed the PUMA™ robot for Unimation. The PUMA™ robot was the watershed product that launched the assembly robot business in the USA and Europe. At Adept, he led the design of the first Direct Drive SCARA Robot and under his helm, Precise Automation introduced the first commercially available collaborative robots. Carlisle was President of the Robotic Industries Association for three years, is the recipient of the Joseph Engelberger Award for Leadership in Robotics, and an elected IEEE Fellow. He has served on the Board of the National Coalition for Advanced Manufacturing, the Boards of the National Center for Manufacturing Science, the Automation Forum of NEMA and is a founding member of the National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative. He holds multiple patents for robot designs.
