After graduation, he worked as an attorney at the U.S. Justice Department. He then took a job in business affairs at Warner Bros. and went on to produce multiple films and direct several of his own.
He served as the executive producer n his first feature, “Christine,” based on the Stephen King novel. He next produced Sidney Lumet’s “Power.”
In the 1990s, he worked with British novelist William Boyd to adapt the Mario Vargas Llosa novel, “Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter,” into the film “Tune in Tomorrow.” His collaboration with Boyd grew into a lifelong friendship and led to another film based on Boyd’s novel, “A Good Man in Africa.”
In 2006 he joined the wine industry with Evening Land Vineyards, making wines mainly in Oregon’s Willamette Valley. In 2012, he started Chapter 24 Vineyards.
He died on July 31 at the age of 69 after a long battle with cancer. According to his wife, his condition stemmed from the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and the subsequent exposure to the toxic chemicals and contaminants spilling from Ground Zero, a few blocks from his home in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood.
