Module 07 - MARKSMANSHIP

BULLET RANGE

HUNTINGsmart! USA Knowledge Base | Campfire Collective (1)

‘Range’ is the distance your bullet will travel. Your safe and effective range is the range that you can accurately shoot from when practicing on targets. Basically, this is the distance from which your shot can deliver enough energy to accurately hit and quickly kill game animals. So, even if your buddies are shooting from different distances, you need to determine your own safe and effective range.

Examples of projectile travel distances:

  • A .22 caliber bullet can travel over 1 ½ mile.
  • A centerfire bullet can travel several miles.
  • Small shot can travel 200-350 yards.
  • Larger shot can travel over 600 yards.
  • Slugs can travel over 800 yards.

DANGEROUS RANGE

‘Dangerous range’ is the maximum distance your bullet will travel when shot at an optimum angle. A bullet travelling in this range has the potential to travel too far, too fast and may cause personal injury or property damage. So do it right and keep it tight.
