Through intimate correspondences, health concerns, and even fashion choices, we get a glimpse into the life of the woman behind the iconic name.
'Beyond Distance': A Friendship's Legacy
The exhibition, titled 'Beyond Distance: Half a Lifelong Friendship of Eileen Chang, Stephen Soong and Mae Fong Soong', is a heartfelt tribute to Chang's enduring bond with the Soong family. It showcases a remarkable collection of 120 items, a mere fraction of the nearly 17,000 treasures entrusted to HKMU by the Soongs, who have been the guardians of Chang's legacy since her passing in 1995.
Among the exhibits are previously unseen photographs, original manuscripts, and even personal belongings of Stephen and Mae-fong Soong, offering a unique insight into their world and Chang's frequent visits to their Hong Kong home.
A Professor's Passion Project
Rebecca Leung Mo-ling, a professor and director of HKMU's Tin Ka Ping Centre of Chinese Culture, played a pivotal role in bringing this exhibition to life. Leung emphasizes Chang's writing as a powerful exploration of timeless themes: "Chang's work delves into the intricate balance between tradition and modernity, East and West, and the clash between personal desires and societal norms - issues that continue to resonate deeply in our contemporary world."
The 30th Anniversary Tribute
Marking the 30th anniversary of Chang's death, the exhibition features a diverse array of objects, including furniture that belonged to the Soong couple. It offers a unique opportunity to delve into the world of this influential novelist and understand the complexities of her life and work.
And here's where it gets intriguing: Chang's writing often blurred the lines between fiction and reality, leaving us with a sense of mystery. What inspired her stories? How did her personal life influence her work? These questions and more are explored in this captivating exhibition.
