Astarion Approval and Disapproval Guide

Approval in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the most important aspect when it comes to romancing a character. No matter which character you may be aiming for, making sure their approval of you is high should always be step one.

Astarion, like all characters has a distinct personality and things he approves of and inversely things she dislikes, so long as you're able to maintain a consistent personality that can appeal to Astarion's traits, gaining approval with him should be simple.

Astarion is your most hedonistic party member. He obeys his own whims and lives at his own pace. His code may seem flippant, but he's rather consistent. Being a vampire who's lived life for a very long time, he enjoys indulging himself in life's finer things as well as discarding those he feels are weak. He dislikes senseless acts of heroism and enjoys the cruelty and struggle. Astarion is a great party member for those who are seeking a less savory approach to life and don't mind living life at the pace Astarion sets.

With that said, here's a list of things Astarion approves and disapproves of.

Astarion Approval List

  • Supporting his desires
  • Being supportive of his nature and condition
  • Aligning yourself with creatures of evil nature, such as goblins or devils
  • Being ruthless to people he views as weak
  • Demonstrating your power over others
  • Appreciation for the fine arts
  • Being cruel to others
  • Letting him bite you

Astarion Disapproval List

  • Showing concern to the weak
  • Exercising restraint
  • Being judgemental towards him and his condition
  • General acts of heroism

Astarion is a tough companion to maintain high approval of as a good-aligned character. However, if you don't mind letting loose every once and a while, being on Astarion's good side might prove to be easier than you think.

How to Romance Astarion in Act 1

After completing Rescuing the Druid Halsin and completing the Side Quest, Save the Refugees. Once you complete these quests and take a long rest, there will be a celebration with the refugees at your campsiteMake your way over to Astarion and follow these choices below to romance him.

  • "Really? Saving lives is awful?"
  • "True, the goblins would have thrown a wilder party."
  • "And what’s your idea of 'a little fun'?"
  • "All right, let’s do it. I’ll see you later."

Return to a bedroll and interact with it for a decision where you can go to bed alone or with Astarion. Choose Astarion and this will lead to a conversation before a passionate night with him. Pick the following choices:

  • "You don’t have me yet."
  • "And what do you want?"
  • "Nod"

You'll then see a romance scene between you and Astarion. During the scene, you can choose to let Astarion bite you or not. The choice here does not impact the romance at all, but letting him bite you will raise his approval of you.

The next morning, you'll wake up and see Astarion and his scars. Select the following options:

  • "Interesting scars. Where'd you get them?"
  • "Why did he write it in Infernal?"

Afterwards, you'll return to your normal activities the next day, with slightly more insight about Astarion's background.

How to Romance Astarion in Act 2

After you take Raphael's deal and to hunt down the Orthon in exchange for information about Astarion's scars, head to rest for the night and Astarion will want to talk to you. Pick the following options:

  • "About your undying love for me?" or " Are you alright?"
  • "So do I. More than anything." or "So the nights we spent together didn't mean anything?"
  • "I care about you. Deeply"
  • "You are worth a great deal to me, no matter what you're going through"

This won't lead to any explicit romance, but it will advance Astarion's romance further. It will be more about Astarion opening up to you about love and sex with you, talking about his troubled past with Cazador and the sexual abuse he had to endure. There's no in-camp dialogue afterward, just continue through the game as normal and you will be able to further progress your relationship with Astarion in Act 3.

How to Romance Astarion in Act 3

In order to trigger Astarion's romance scene in Act 3, you must have finished his companion quest which involves taking down his master Cazador. Following Cazador's defeat, you have the option to either let Astarion complete the ritual or stop the ritual (you'll only get this prompt if you kept the ritual sacrifices alive during the fight).

You can get two different outcomes depending on what choice you make, so we'll outline both here.

Stopping the Ritual

If you stopped the ritual, head back to camp after the fight and initiate a long rest. Astarion will express some disappointment in not completing the ritual, joking about getting used to the shadows again. Pick any of the options for the first two prompts, and then Astarion will ask you to follow him. Agree to follow him.

Astarion will take you to a graveyard and open up to you a little. You can pick any of the options for his prompts up until he tells you he'd like to enjoy living again with everything life has to offer. Pick one of the following options:

  • "Oh? Do you want a little fun?" or "I thought you'd never ask." - This will lead to a brief romance scene with Astarion.
  • "Let's just... stay here? Together?" - This won't lead to a romantic scene, but Astarion will still be grateful you decided to stay with him while he opened up.

Afterwards, the screen will fade to black and you'll wake up the next morning. You won't have any additional dialogue, but just know Astarion is grateful for everything you've done for him.

Completing the Ritual

If you want to complete the ritual and have Astarion ascend, allow him to carve his runes on to Cazador's back and don't interrupt him from the ritual. After it's done, you'll have to kill the Gur while you leave Cazador's palace. Then, head to camp.

Astarion will approach you when you rest. Pick any of the first options and then select the following:

  • "I want to be a vampire, like you" or "I want you. I want your body."
  • "Yes, that's all I want."
  • "Please, yes."

Afterwards, you'll see a sex scene between you and Astarion. After the scene is over, pick the following options:

  • Kneel.

Then select either of the options. Astarion will then feed on you, which will turn you into a vampire and give you the vampire bite ability. This route is much more carnal and less emotional, so you can pick whichever one you think would be better for you. With that, you'll finally have completed your romance with Astarion!
