ALEX CALAMIA (2024)

About Alex

I’m an Emmy Award Winning, AMS Certified, Broadcast Meteorologist with a passion for creating compelling graphics, telling engaging stories, and gardening in the southeast. I joined News 12 Long Island and Hudson Valley as their weekend morning Meteorologist in June 2022 and as the creator and host of a network-wide garden segment, Garden Guide. Previously, I worked for WLTX as a weekday morning meteorologist and garden expert in Columbia, SC.

I’m a Meteorologist & a Gardener – it makes me different

More than a meteorologist – In today’s changing media landscape, we’re required to provide more for our communities than a forecast. During the pandemic, I created a South Carolina garden community for WLTX with thousands of active members. I grew an edible garden outside the station and shared my results alongside my forecasts. This allowed an open and honest conversation about how climate change is impacting the reliability of our food supply.

I am now working in New York where I created a new concept, Garden Guide. In Garden Guide, I empower people to grow a garden with tips that keep our local climate in mind. My sponsored segment is available in all 5 News12 regions as well as Cheddar & News12 New York.

Some of my garden videos on my own Instagram and TikTok have been watched one million times.

Experienced scientist – I’ve helped guide my community with accurate forecasting through some of our toughest days. I worked in Florida during Hurricane Irma, and South Carolina during the 3rd largest tornado outbreak in the state’s recorded history in April 2020. In New York, I walked viewers through the aftermath of the wettest day on record in September 2023, and numerous tornadoes and snow storms.

Honors & Accolades – In 2022, I was awarded a Southeast Regional Emmy for my forecasts. The Southeast Broadcast Association also honored me with a Star Award for Weatherperson of the Year. I’ve been nominated for awards by the Florida Association of Broadcasters every year during my early career.

My Background

I hold a B.S. in Meteorology from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey where I graduated with honors. I was actively involved as president of the Rutgers Meteorology AMS and NWA local chapter and was awarded “Meteorology Student of the Year” by the Rutgers Meteorology Department.

I was born on Long Island and grew up in New York City with a passion for weather. It was no secret that I wanted to be a meteorologist, but I didn’t see myself in the television landscape until I experienced devastation from “Superstorm” Sandy in my hometown. Nothing I was learning in the classroom could prepare me for those moments, but that education was everything I needed to prepare others for nature’s fury.

My career started right out of college as a weather producer for WPIX 11 in New York. In 2017, I moved to the Sunshine State to work for WCJB in Gainesville, FL as a meteorologist and reporter. One of my most memorable experiences in Florida was Hurricane Irma. I stayed at work for 3 days forecasting in the studio and reporting in the field through the storm. Although north Florida was spared from hurricane-force winds, the floodwaters were stubborn to recede. I spent months sharing stories of devastation and of hope in the aftermath of Irma.

My favorite way to spend my free time is in the dirt! I grew hundreds of tropical plants in my NYC backyard throughout high school and college. My parents are now the proud owners of some of the oldest palm trees growing outdoors in New York. This wasn’t enough for me though! I landscaped a drought-tolerant courtyard for my co-workers at WCJB in Florida, and I am thrilled to get my hands (and sometimes suit) dirty at WLTX in South Carolina where I am growing organic fruits and vegetables in Gandy’s Garden.
